Carrie Underwood is making headlines again after her latest outfit on ‘Idol’ sparked a wave of online backlash.
The singer appeared on American Idol for 90s night dressed as Michele from Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion. She recreated the iconic character’s look in a pink sequin mini dress with a fur-trim hem and a bow at the center, paired with a purple mini handbag and matching platform heels. She completed the outfit with a tousled half-up, half-down hairstyle, a choker, pearl drop earrings, and a shimmery makeup look inspired by the era.

Carrie Underwood Dresses As Michele From Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion
While many felt she fully committed to the theme and delivered a Barbie-doll-like transformation, reactions online were largely critical.
One user wrote, “Michelle would have hated you. Same with Romy.” Another commented, “Maga Barbie.” A different user added, “Do not disrespect the legends by letting this dollar store damage Barbie dressed up like the queen.” Ouch!
One simply wrote, “We don’t care. She’s MAGA.” Another remarked, “A mess.”
Someone else added, “Romy and Michelle are NOT MAGA!” while another said, “How dare she defile such a wonderful movie.” One commenter wrote, “They would hate her. Bye maga.” Another added, “Michelle would never sing for that man.” A different user said, “Romy and Michele fans do not claim her.” One final comment read, “this is insulting to Lisa Kudrow.”
Underwood performed at Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration after saying she felt honored to be invited. The mom of two described the moment as being “humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”

Carrie Underwood Addresses Being Booed On ‘Idol’
More recently, Carrie addressed frequent audience booing during tapings, which she says she has learned to brush off.
Whether due to assumptions about her political views or reactions to her blunt judging style, Underwood acknowledged the audience response on social media. On Feb. 16, she wrote on X, “Spoiler alert…I get booed A LOT from our Hollywood Week audience.” Later, on March 2, she added, “Boo me. I don’t care.”
She also expanded on her approach during an episode of the official American Idol podcast, saying, “I don’t care. I can’t lie, I’m a terrible liar. As a fan of the show, if there was ever somebody that kind of had an off night and everybody’s like, ‘Oh, my God that’s so great,’ I’m sitting at home being like, ‘What? Liars!’”
Underwood added that judging requires confidence and balance, explaining, “[It’s] tough to do as a judge. It takes a lot of confidence in yourself, and you don’t want to say something that’s going to tank them in the competition. It’s just something that they need to be thinking about if they go forward.”
