The 2027 Met Gala theme has officially been announced—but instead of excitement, it’s sparking fierce debate online.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute revealed on July 31 that its Spring 2027 exhibition, and the inspiration behind the 2027 Met Gala, will be John Galliano: Horizons, a retrospective celebrating the British designer’s decades-long career. The announcement immediately reignited discussion surrounding Galliano’s controversial past, with many social media users questioning why he was chosen for one of fashion’s highest honors.
The exhibition will spotlight Galliano’s work across Givenchy, Christian Dior, Maison Margiela, and his eponymous label, examining his influence on modern fashion and couture.

The recognition is particularly significant because Galliano becomes just the third living designer to receive a solo Costume Institute exhibition, following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo in 2017.
However, many fans argued that Galliano's legacy cannot be separated from the events of 2010 and 2011, when he was arrested and later convicted by a Paris court after making racist and antisemitic remarks at a café.
The scandal led to his dismissal from Dior and his namesake label.
The announcement quickly went viral, with critics taking to social media to express their frustration.

"At this point I'm just convinced the Met Gala just goes, 'How can we be as culturally insensitive as possible?' and whatever they come up with becomes the next theme," one person wrote.
Another compared the situation to other controversial public figures, writing, "Kind of like the way people 'forgive' Woody Allen..."
Others questioned why the fashion industry appears willing to move on from Galliano's past.
"I don't understand the fashion industry and why they forgive and forget so quickly," one commenter said.
Not everyone dismissed Galliano's comeback, however. "We can accept someone's apology without forgiveness. He needs to forgive himself for throwing his career away," another person wrote.
Galliano's Controversial Past To Be Presented As Part Of The Met Gala Theme
Galliano has publicly addressed his past several times, including in the 2024 documentary High & Low: John Galliano, which revisited the scandal and included footage of the incident.
"It was a disgusting thing, foul thing that I did. It was just horrific," Galliano said in the documentary. He also reflected on prejudice more broadly, adding, "I can say I'm not racist, but every day you actually learn that all of us are a bit. But we just need to unlearn it... I am an immigrant. I was one."
Despite the backlash, Anna Wintour defended the Costume Institute's decision in comments shared by Vogue.
"There is no one more deserving of an exhibition of this scale than John Galliano," Wintour said. "His body of work—at Dior, Givenchy, Margiela, his namesake label and more—combines erudition and creativity, darkness and light, the past, the present, the future all smashing together in a brilliant way."
She continued, "He's a great designer and his career isn't defined by a moment—something that he will live with for the rest of his life. The exhibition won't shy away from any of the darkness in John's past. It's part of what has shaped him. The show will take in the full arc of his career and grapple with all of it."
The Costume Institute also emphasized that the exhibition will directly confront Galliano's history rather than ignore it.
In a press release, the museum stated that the exhibition will examine "the derogatory conduct that fundamentally altered his career and public reception" while exploring "how artistic achievement should be understood alongside ethical accountability."
According to the museum, John Galliano: Horizons will specifically address the designer's antisemitic, racist, and anti-Asian remarks made in 2010 and 2011, his dismissal from Dior, his conviction in France, his subsequent treatment for substance addiction, and his later public acknowledgment of his actions.
With fashion's biggest night still months away, the announcement has already ignited one of the most divisive conversations the Met Gala has seen in years.
