John Goodman is opening up about the unexpected effects of his 200-pound weight loss.

The 74-year-old actor recently discussed his dramatic transformation during a podcast appearance, admitting that he’s still adjusting to his slimmer appearance and that the changes to his body have left him feeling self-conscious in certain situations. Goodman also reflected on how his previous weight may have affected his acting career.

John Goodman Says He Turned Down A Scene Because He Was Insecure About His Body In New Interview

The Roseanne star opened up about his weight loss journey during a November 2nd appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he discussed his career, personal life, and adjusting to his new appearance.

John also revealed that his weight loss made him uncomfortable with the idea of exposing his body on camera. While starring in HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones, he recalled turning down a more risquee scene because he wasn’t confident about how his body would look after losing so much weight. The production eventually found a way to film the scene without requiring him to appear without clothing.

“I said, ‘I don’t know. I’m good,'” he recalled. “My body is too messed up from losing all this weight… It’s weird. I think of myself as one way, and then I look at myself [and think], ‘Oh, wow.’ It’s strange. It’s fun to get used to. That’s a lot of stuff I’m getting used to.”

John Goodman Says His Weight May Have Been A Form Of 'Self-Sabotage'

The Monster's Inc. icon also reflected on whether his weight had held him back professionally over the years.

John has previously revealed that he weighed nearly 400 pounds at his heaviest before making major lifestyle changes. After getting sober, he worked on improving his health through dietary changes, regular exercise, and working with a personal trainer. He has also spoken about undergoing stomach surgery, which contributed to his transformation.

When asked if he thought his size had limited his acting opportunities, the actor admitted that he believed it may have played a role, but also suggested that his own mindset was partly to blame. He described some of his past behavior as a form of self-sabotage.

"I'm sure it did," he continued. "And a lot of it, I think, might have been self-sabotage. I was working enough as I was. I wasn't crazy about it, but I wonder if I probably sabotaged myself."
