When it comes to losing stubborn belly fat, what you eat can make all the difference—and not all “healthy” foods are created equal. According to nutrition experts, certain staples can actively support fat loss by boosting metabolism, balancing blood sugar, and keeping you full longer, while others may quietly sabotage your progress by triggering cravings and inflammation.
From protein-packed favorites like eggs and chicken to sneaky culprits like sugary sodas and ultra-processed pastries, knowing which foods to prioritize—and which to limit—can help you target belly fat more effectively and build a healthier, more sustainable routine.

Best: Eggs
Eggs are one of the most popular protein options, and there's so many different ways to cook them. They're also a classic, versatile, tried and true breakfast food. You can scramble them, make a veggie omelette, enjoy them sunny side up with a side of toast. Daniel Boyer, MD of Farr Institute, says adding eggs to your plate each morning is one of the best ways to up your protein intake in order to build muscle and lose fat.
"One large egg contains approximately 6 grams of protein," he notes.

Best: Chicken
Chicken is one of the most widely enjoyed protein options out there—and with good reason! Krutika Nanavati, dietitian from Clinicspots, says it's one of the best foods you can eat every day over 40 if you're trying to gain muscle and lose belly fat. As she notes, "[Chicken breast] is relatively low in calories and fat, and is high in protein. This makes it an ideal choice for those looking to build muscle mass." Additionally, this meat is packed with helpful nutrients like vitamin B6, which will help your body metabolize all that protein. It's also a good source of niacin, another vitamin that's great for your overall health, especially when it comes to your nervous system.

Worst: Sodas
Sorry, Coca-Cola lovers! Liquid sugar is one of the fastest ways to spike blood sugar and ignite cravings.
"Sugary sodas cause a craving for pure sweetness or rapid energy because of the simple carbohydrates flooding your bloodstream and triggering a huge dopamine release," Dr. Ayesha Bryant, MD, Clinical Advisor at Alpas Wellness, explains. They deliver calories without satiety, leading to blood sugar crashes that trigger even more cravings shortly after. Sparkling water with citrus, unsweetened iced tea, or flavored seltzer without added sugars make a great alternative.

Worst: Pastries
Sugary pastries such as croissants, donuts, cupcakes, etc., can feel like a delicious treat, but eating them as your first meal of the day or even just as a frequent snack is dangerous to your health as you age.
Dana Ellis Hunnes, PhD, MPH, RD, senior clinical dietitian at UCLA Medical Center, explains, "The least healthy type of carbohydrate to eat over the age of 40 is ultra-processed carbs that are frequently found in packaged foods such as pastries; think Pop-Tarts," she notes. The reason these types of carbs are not great for your health and weight at any age, let alone over 40, Hunnes adds, is because they provide "no nutritional benefit; they are often devoid of vitamins and minerals, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory compounds." This is terrible for the metabolism and potential to lose weight, she says, because it leads to "insulin spikes, increases in IGF-1, an inflammatory marker, and increases risk for chronic diseases and deposition (fat storage) of calories in the body."
