The recent cyclospora outbreak linked to lettuce has sparked concern among American consumers after thousands of people in have been reported sick—including a whopping 9,000 in Michigan. But when President Donald Trump was asked about when it would be safe to eat lettuce again last Friday, his response quickly drew criticism online, with many calling his answer dismissive amid ongoing public health concerns.
During an exchange with reporters at the Oval Office, Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked Trump, “When is it going to be safe to eat lettuce again?” The president responded, “I don’t know. I haven’t thought about it. It’s the first time I’ve been asked that question. Are you eating lettuce recently?” His remarks prompted backlash from social media users who argued that the issue deserved more attention given the number of people affected.

What is the cyclospora outbreak?
Cyclospora is a foodborne illness caused by a parasite called Cyclospora cayetanensis. The infection typically affects the digestive system and can cause symptoms including prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, and weight loss.
Health officials have been investigating a recent outbreak connected to lettuce, specifically from Taylor Farms (who previously served as the supplier to Taco Bell), raising questions about food safety measures and when consumers can confidently return to their regularly scheduled diets, leafy greens and all.
Cyclospora infections are often associated with contaminated food or water. Fresh produce, including leafy greens, can become contaminated during growing, harvesting, processing, or handling.
Doocy: "There's this nasty parasite that is giving people in nine states explosive diarrhea. When is it going to be safe to eat lettuce again?"

Trump’s lettuce comments spark backlash
After being asked about the lettuce outbreak, Trump later suggested imposing economic measures against Mexico, saying: "I think that what we're going to do is we’re going to put a major tariff on Mexico because of the lettuce." The comment was met with laughter from people in the room—but not everyone found the punchline funny.
The exchange quickly circulated online, where some BlueSky users criticized the response and questioned whether the seriousness of the outbreak was being recognized.
One user wrote, "My God he is so vile. Just a dog sh-- person."
Another commented, "OMG this man is so unacceptable. What a complete loser."
A third user poked fun at the president, writing, "Does he look like a man who has ever ONCE eaten a piece of lettuce?"
Another critic wrote, "If it’s not entirely clear to every American already…the president of the United States simply does not care about the health, safety, or well-being of Americans. He cares, and has only ever cared, about himself…his wealth, his power, his image, his perceived popularity."
All in all, Americans online are frustrated with a leader who is unable to provide clear information and reassurance during public health concerns.
Guess we'll keep skipping salads for now.
