By now everyone’s heard about the major Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s announcement last week. The couple made the bombshell announcement on their Instagram account before they told their families.
This news caused an outcry from pro-royals fans all over the world. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex resigned as members of the royal family—which most people didn’t even know was even possible.
In their heartfelt Instagram post, Meghan and Harry noted that they wished to be financially independent, balance their time between the United Kingdom and North America, provide their family with the space to focus on the next chapter, and more. The news did not sit well for the Queen as well as the other members of the royal family.
After the announcement, Queen Elizabeth called for emergency talks at Sandringham. The Queen agreed to a “period of transition” for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. According to BBC news, the queen stated that the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK after Harry and Meghan “made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives.”
The UK tabloid media has been relentless with negative coverage of Meghan—the media played a significant role in their decision. The couple decided the best way to deal with the media is to fight back. Both Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have filed lawsuits against the owners of UK tabloid newspapers last summer for allegedly stealing personal information and publishing it in their publications.
In general, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are getting positive support from both sides of the pond. Although it’s been a pleasure watching the young family making a difference in the world in their royal roles, they assure us that this is not the end. The couple was already preparing to launch their own Sussex Royal charity and plan to continue to do more charitable work around the world.
