One of the worst feelings is when you are using your phone and realize your battery is super low, about to die.

While a low battery is something every iPhone user deals with from time to time, it’s still super pesky, and risky when you’re out and about. Although having a low battery and needing to charge your phone is routine, how often you need to charge your device throughout the day actually depends on your charging habits. Believe it or not, there are good ones and bad ones. Read more about what many tech experts believe is the ‘worst’ charging habit below.

The One iPhone Charging Habit You Should Stop Doing

Has this ever happened to you? You're getting ready for a day out on the town, and, obviously, want to take your iPhone with you. You left your phone plugged in on your night stand, so it was charging all night. Before you know it, you get to where you need to be, and your battery life has increased drastically. Then, before you're ready to go home, it's on the verge of dying, and you panic, wanting to get to place to charge as soon as possible.

This is a likely scenario for many people, who may not realize the issue is that they've been leaving their iPhone plugged in overnight. While it may seem like charging sense, to have your phone charging for the seven to eight consecutive hours you're not using it, that's actually way too much time to leave your device plugged in.

"Here's the thing—batteries have feelings too, sort of," note tech experts at Asurion. They don’t like being at 100% all the time. It stresses them out. Lithium-ion batteries thrive best when kept between 20% and 80%. So, while your phone smartly stops charging at 100%, sitting at full charge all night, every night, may degrade the battery's health more quickly over time."

Which Charging Habits To Follow Instead

In order to give yourself more time between charges, and keep your battery life as young and full as possible, there are several easy, beneficial things you can do. Aside from avoiding 'cheap' charging cables, if you can, wait until your phone is between 20-30% battery life to charge it, instead of letting it drain past 20%.

Additionally, you can also use the nifty iPhone setting, 'Optimize Battery Charging,' if you genuinely prefer to plug-in your phone before bed. In this case, when the setting is turned on, your phone will automatically stop charging at 80% to optimize your battery and reduce it's chances of getting worn down or overheated.

At the end of the day, we're all human, and battery mistakes are common. Still, avoiding the temptation to leave your iPhone plugged in before bed will save you a lot of struggle.
