Costco is continuing its nationwide expansion, but some shoppers are disappointed that the warehouse giant is still skipping three states entirely.
The company is set to open 14 new warehouses across the U.S. and Canada in October and November, with new locations planned in states including Missouri, Texas, New York, Kansas, California, Idaho, Arizona, Virginia and Wisconsin.
But there won’t be a new Costco in Rhode Island, West Virginia or Wyoming. These are the only three states in the country that still don’t have a Costco warehouse, and residents have been waiting for this to change for quite a long time.

Rhode Island Shoppers Want Their Own Costco
Rhode Island residents have been asking for a Costco for years—who wouldn't want access to all those delicious snacks, food court, and bakery items? But the warehouse superstore chain has no plans to answer their prayers.
In a 2025 Reddit discussion about the lack of a Rhode Island location, one commenter wrote that residents should "make a concerted effort now to bring Costco to Rhode Island," noting that this change could create new jobs and tax revenue.
Another Rhode Island shopper called out the lack of stores in their state in a review of a Massachusetts Costco, writing: "Best store.. why cant you build one in Rhode Island... I have to go an hour either way to get to a Costco."
Costco has considered Rhode Island locations before. A potential Cranston location fell through, and the company also considered a Warwick site in 2024.
West Virginians Are Upset, Too
West Virginia is also still without a Costco, and residents have discussed the lack of the retailer online.
In a recent Reddit thread about states without Costco, one person who was looking at southwestern Virginia said they expanded their search and realized "all of WV doesn't have a Costco." Another commenter responded that their uncle, the city manager of Charleston, has been trying to get a Costco deal in the area.
There is clearly some demand for the chain to finally make its way into the state.
Wyoming Shoppers Have It Even Worse
For Wyoming Costco fans, getting to a warehouse can mean a serious road trip.
C.J. Beecher, who lives in Sheridan, Wyoming, wrote in 2025 that they drive 130 miles to Billings, Montana, every month to shop at Costco. The writer said they hadn't realized "just how vital Costco was" to their household until moving to Wyoming, particularly because bulk shopping helps them keep their grocery costs down.
Wyoming residents also chimed in on the recent Reddit discussion about the three Costco-less states. One commenter simply asked: "How does Wyoming not have a Costco??"
Unfortunately, it looks like Rhode Island, West Virginia and Wyoming will have to keep waiting—and for some Costco fans, that means continuing to cross state lines for their bulk groceries, cheap gas and beloved $1.50 hot dog combos.
