Having an iPhone is a privilege, but it’s no secret that it can be tempting to throw it away when it starts running too slowly.

These days, for many people, their iPhone is like an extension of themselves, and getting through a day without it can be very difficult. Therefore, when it runs super slow, it can be extremely frustrating and mess up your day-to-day tasks. iPhones can begin to slow down for a variety of reasons, and if you’re looking for ways to speed yours up, here are three tips from tech experts to get you started. Read more about what they had to say below.

1. Offload Unused Apps

When you first get an iPhone, it's understandable to want to enjoy and download all sorts of new apps that can help you get things done and kill time when needed. However, after a while, most users begin to forget about all the apps they have, and they simply end up taking up storage, eventually slowing down their phone.

"Apps you opened once in 2021 and forgot about are still living rent-free in your phone's head and slowing things down," explains tech pro Sam Devia of eRepair. "They take up storage and background resources even when you never touch them. To fix this, go to Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage, and turn on Offload Unused Apps. The icon stays on your home screen, and if you ever need the app again, it will download automatically."

2. Update Your iOS

As not everyone loves certain Apple iOS software updates, and there are some theories that updating your software cuts your iPhone's life short so you can get an upgrade, there are many tech experts who would disagree.

"iPhones also will run smoother if you just keep the iOS up to date," notes cyber expert Baruch Labunski. "If you don't update your phone to the newest software, your phone will run slower, probably use more battery life, and run to keep the phone going. Regardless of the updates and minor notifications, your phone will also perform better. Keeping your phone the same for a while and not updating causes more updates to have to be done in the future, with your phone running slower and slower."

3. Clear Excess Storage

Having a lack of free space on your iPhone can make a much bigger difference than most iPhone users would think. If you've ever gotten full storage notifications, there's a chance you've also dealt with a slow-moving iPhone. If you can clear up some space or purchase a larger iCloud plan, this could help speed things up.

"Your iPhone needs breathing room, not a digital junk drawer full of screenshots of receipts and memes you forgot about," says Devia. "When storage drops too low, phones become slow, crash, restart randomly, and fail updates. To clean it up, go to Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage, and keep at least 5 to 10 GB free by deleting unused apps, videos, and old photos."
