Sandra Bullock is back in the spotlight, and aside from promoting her latest film project, she’s now entered the heated AI debate surrounding Hollywood right now.
The actress recently did an interview as she participated in the CNBC Changemakers Summit. After being asked about AI-generated trailers people were making for her upcoming movie, Practical Magic 2, she shared her feelings on artificial intelligence, especially how it’s slowly working its way into the film and entertainment industry. Controversially, she encouraged people both in and out of the business to “lean into” the tool, make it their “friend,” and learn how to use it for future jobs, tasks, etc. Subsequently, there were a whole lot of social media users who disagreed with her, slamming her on different platforms. Sandra Bullock Says People Should 'Lean Into' Using AI & Make It Their 'Friend' During New Interview
The Blindside icon is making a lot of headlines these days, as she's back to performing and filming following the death of her long-term partner, Bryan Randall, in 2023.
Right now, she's doing a lot of press and promo for Practical Magic 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the late 90s fantasy witch film starring her and Nicole Kidman. Over the last few weeks, she's been stepping back out onto red carpets, sitting for interviews, and two weeks ago, attending the CNBC Changemakers Summit in New York City. During the summit, she sat down for an interview with the Warner Bros. Pictures co-chair and CEO Pam Abdy.
As the pair were asked questions about the new sequel, which is due to hit theaters in September, Sandra was asked to share her thoughts on fans who were creating their own teaser trailers for the movie using AI technology, before an official one came out. She responded and touched on the overall subject of growing AI tech and how the entertainment industry could be introducing it to more projects and jobs over time.
"It's here," she said. "We have to observe it. We have to understand it. We have to lean into it. We have to use it in a really constructive and creative way, make it our friend rather than - I mean, we have to be incredibly cautious and aware of it because there are people who will use it for evil and not good. But I do feel that there's a place for it… It's here. We have to just be friends in some dark way."

Social Media Users Slam Sandra Following Her Comments
Right now, artificial intelligence is an extremely hot topic. As it continues to develop and become more accessible to everyday people, there's a lot of concern surrounding what life could be like when it starts getting used and replacing jobs in businesses big and small. Additionally, when it comes to the film industry, there are a large number of people against using AI for script writing or editing, post-production, or even using it to replace actors.
Therefore, when the Oscar winner expressed her feelings towards AI and how she thinks people should not only "use it" and "make it their friend," there were thousands of social media users who started weighing in on what she had to say, slamming her as "disconnected" from reality and more.
"A 61-year-old woman, wealthy most of her life, lives a life so disconnected from the majority's reality, thinks AI should be our friend," wrote a Reddit user. "Sure, she won't live long enough to see the effects on our water supply, and leaves enough money behind that it won't matter to her family. Shocking."
"Girl, no, we don't," responded another. "You're welcome to move to any neighborhood where a data center is being built if you love it so much."
"Yeah, no," wrote an X user. "People who have decades of established wealth have no business telling people living paycheck to paycheck that they should embrace the job-killing machine that poisons their communities. They are not living in the same reality as the rest of us."
"Easy for her to say, she is already wealthy," responded a user, with another adding, "She's the enemy of creativity."
