Elon Musk Says He Doesn’t Care If People ‘Loathe’ Him In A New Interview
It’s no secret that one of the most influential people in the world is also one of the most debated and controversial people in the world – Tesla founder Elon Musk.
The South African native addressed criticism of his growing influence in politics during an interview with The Economist editor-in-chief Zanny Minton Beddoes that was shared on July 25th. The editor began challenging him on whether using his social media platform to weigh in on global politics was good for democracy. During their back and forth, Beddoes told Elon, “people loathe you,” which led to a blunt response from him.
“Maybe some people do loathe me, and that’s probably true. I don’t care,” he replied. “But the fact that, as you pointed out, a quarter billion people follow me is that I think a lot more people actually like me than don’t.”
Then, the 55-year-old shifted his conversation to how he sees media outlets as the real issue behind today’s political tensions and more.
“Do you realize the media is despised?” he asked the interviewer. “Do you realize that journalists, the view of journalists is like, it’s like a favorable view of journalists is like 15%?… They hate you far more than they hate me. The media is the problem. People don’t trust the media.”

Fans & Social Media Users React To Elon's Interview
Snippets from the new interview quickly made their way to social media, where many of the billionaire's fans and supporters applauded his comments and agreed with his criticism of the press. Not everyone agreed with his beliefs, but many of the reactions focused on his view that public distrust of the media has increased negative opinions about him, helping fuel another round of debate online.
"I think he took it very well!" wrote an Instagram user. "Sounds like the media is the one not taking his response well."
"Elon is 100% right," added a fan of his. "Media manipulates us, and we hate them!"
One user wrote that the entrepreneur "hit the nail on the head," as another commented, "I love Elon. He is right."
"I don't think he's wrong," added a user.
Though there were still some users who felt that Elon is "dangerous," also accusing the supporters of his in the comments of being "bots," it looks like he still has a strong amount of support on his side.
