While sharing a statistic on transgender people in the United States, she used wording that read that people “identify” as transgender, causing a wave of backlash from social media users who argued that terminology was offensive, as people do not choose to ‘identify’ as transgender, but simply are. The famous performer might not be acting in major motion pictures anymore, but she's still staying relevant with her posts on social media, which are often dedicated to her advocacy work and her political stances.
One of her more recent posts on Bluesky, the left-leaning social media app meant to be a more "open" rendition of X (formerly Twitter), is catching a lot of people's attention and making waves, not necessarily because of its content, but because of how numerous social media users reacted to it.
On July 17th, she took to the platform to call out President Trump on some of his latest comments that were offensive towards transgender people in the United States, writing that he had an "obsession" with them, considering how often he brought them up and how he's bothered by them.
"Just 0.95% to 1.0% of the United States population aged 13 and older identifies as transgender. So, what is Trump's obsession with transgender folks?" she wrote.

The award-winning veteran movie star has long been an outspoken activist, frequently speaking out on human rights and social justice issues, and is extremely active on her Bluesky account. She tends to be a hit with the more left-leaning users on the platform, but this time, the wording she used in her post struck a nerve with some.
While the overall message was one of support, many transgender users and allies replied that the phrase "identify as" has become controversial and sometimes, offensive, because it can suggest that a person's gender identity is a belief or choice rather than who they are.
"I know you mean well, but 'identifies as' is outdated language because what we're described as 'identifying as', you are simply described as 'are', and the double standard is objectionable," responded a Bluesky user.
"No one 'identifies' as transgender Mia," wrote another. "That is terf language. People *are* transgender."
"Identifies as? No. They ARE transgender," added an angry user in a deleted response, as reported by The Daily Mail. "Saying they 'identify as' insinuates that they are not really what they are claiming to be. If you truly care about trans folks, do...better."
