Kim Kardashian Wins Lawsuit Against New York Man After She Mistakes His Identity In An Instagram Story
It's no secret that the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star is passionate about the law and criminal justice.
From playing a high-power female attorney who takes on other women's cases on TV, to graduation from law school, the SKIMS founder is working hard to follow her more 'serious' passion. Though she's not a licensed attorney yet, for years, she's been working to reform the prison system in the United States, advocating for wrongfully accused prisoners and death row inmates.
In 2024, Kim wanted to promote a petition that would pause the execution of a Texas death row inmate, Iván Cantú. In her post, she shared a photo of a man, including the caption, "The state will execute Ivan Cantu in 2 days. Please sign the petition to demand that Collin County DA request a withdrawal of the execution date."
However, instead of using a photo of Ivan Cantu, who was imprisoned in Texas, she used a picture of a New York man by the same name.
Though she took the post down as soon as she realized she had the wrong guy, the New York resident filed a lawsuit against the mom-of-four, and in the complaint, claimed her post subjected him "to hatred, contempt, and/or ridicule." He also stated he was dealing with emotional distress and a "loss of reputation." He ultimately lost in court last November.
Social Media Slams Kim Kardashian As New York's Ivan Cantu Is Hit With $145K In Legal Fees
According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, the nightmare is continuing for the misidentified Ivan Cantu, who has been hit with a $145K bill that would cover the All's Fair actress's legal fees, as she reportedly asked the court to be reimbursed.
Cantu filed a new motion to have the fees dismissed, citing that Kim is a billionaire "born and raised in great wealth and luxury," while he works hard to raise his two children. Once word of the new motion got out, social media users began to slam the famous reality star, echoing his sentiments that, as a billionaire, this man should not be left responsible for her legal fees, considering she is the one who made a mistake that would seemingly change his life.
"He shouldn't have to pay," commented an Instagram user. "Pay your own legal bill, Kim."
"Kim needs to take responsibility for her mistake," added another. "This is actually very sad. He's going to be in financial ruin over her mistake."
"She is rich as all get out," added a user. "$145k should be chump change to her."
One user accused Kim of being "always greedy," and one added, "If she agrees [with this], shame on her!"
"This wasn't fair," commented another, as one added, "She's a billionaire!"
