Anne Hathaway has a new project under her belt, a Days of Thunder sequel, and one of the original cast members is not too happy about it, slamming her publicly.

The Princess Diaries icon was recently revealed to be one of the main stars in the upcoming remake of the 1990 film, Days of Thunder. She recently posed beside Tom Cruise, who is reprising his role, for a promotional photo, which led to a response from Randy Quaid, one of the original cast members. His response was very angry, slamming Anne publicly, calling her “woke” and suggesting she’s unattractive. The post didn’t come long after she was previously bashed by right-leaning social media users for an equality acceptance speech. Read more about her casting news and how the internet reacted below.

Anne Hathaway Is Cast In A ‘Days Of Thunder’ Sequel

There are numerous sequels movie fans are gearing up for, from Practical Magic 2 being released this fall to more unexpected comebacks, like the upcoming remake of Days of Thunder.

For those unfamiliar, the film was released in 1990 and followed the story of two NASCAR drivers who enter a rivalry, one being a rookie, played by Tom Cruise, and the other being an experienced veteran. 36 years later, the Mission: Impossible star will be returning to his role, and now, Anne Hathaway will be joining the cast, playing a team owner and engineer. The first movie featured Nicole Kidman, who played her ex, Tom’s love interest, but will not be returning for the sequel, with many speculating it’s due to their infamous divorce.

Over the last two weeks, Paramount Pictures began releasing teasers and promotional photos as they promote Days of Thunder 2, with the Oscar-winning actress and action icon being seen smiling ear to ear, seemingly happy to work together. It marks the second follow-up film Anne is slated to star in over the next two years, with Princess Diaries 3 being in development as well.

Randy Quaid Slams Anne On Social Media Following Casting Announcement

There are many fans of the original racecar-themed movie who are excited to see the Top Gun actor back on their screens, as well as many who are excited to see what the new storyline will contain.

However, there were some internet users who weren’t thrilled about it, especially the mom-of-two’s casting. One of the most notable users was actor Randy Quaid, who played a racing team owner in the original 1990 version of the film. The 75-year-old took to the internet to bash the upcoming sequel, honing in on Anne’s casting and bringing politics into the mix.

“We need Nicole [Kidman] back,” he began in a ranting post shared on X. “You need the original girl. It’s not personal; it’s filmmaking. Anne isn’t [hot], because, if you haven’t noticed, she’s pregnant.”

“Anne Hathaway is a leftist, woke, horrible choice for DAYS OF THUNDER NASCAR audience who are MAGA,” he continued in a follow-up post. The older chick for Tom in this film needs to be Nicole. That’s the casting that would sell the idea.”

The slamming of the Devil Wears Prada star’s politics, in addition to her casting, didn’t come long after she was attacked online by Republicans and conservatives, who recirculated a speech she made when she was awarded the National Ally for Equality Award in 2018 by the Human Rights Campaign. In her speech, she spoke about harmful gender roles, which triggered backlash from right-leaning users, who went so far as to threaten to boycott her future films due to her beliefs.
