At my sister’s bachelorette this summer, we were sharing a bathroom. While I was layering on multiple face serums like it was a full-time job, my sister teased me for turning into a “product girly.” To which I responded that I’d always been into skincare.

Here’s the thing, though. You can have the most overflowing, buzzy, BeautyTok-approved skincare bag in the world, but if you’re serious about your skin, red light therapy deserves a spot in your routine, too. Red and near-infrared light stimulates the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin, which is why studies have linked consistent use to smoother texture, fewer fine lines, and reduced inflammation over time. Basically, it’s working with your skin’s own biology to rebuild it from the inside, versus just sitting on top of it like most serums and creams. I especially appreciate LED face masks because they allow you to tap into the kind of skincare benefits you used to only be able to find (and pay for) in a dermatologist’s office.

Now, I’m no stranger to LED face masks, but I was genuinely thrilled to get the chance to try the Megelin Duo-Lux LASER & LED Light Therapy Mask for myself. It’s FDA-cleared and clinically proven to improve the appearance of wrinkles, pigmentation, and inflammation, and after putting it to the test, I have some thoughts.

If you haven’t hopped on the red light mask trend yet, maybe it’s because you’re still holding out for the right device. Most light therapy masks rely on LEDs alone, cycling through different wavelengths of red or near-infrared light to work on the skin at varying depths. Laser technology, on the other hand, uses more targeted light for deeper treatment. Megelin’s Duo-Lux LASER & LED Light Therapy Mask (currently on sale for $499) is designed to give you both.

The brand calls its technology Duo-Lux Fusion, which combines laser precision and LED in the same light units. You get the targeted precision of laser technology alongside the broader coverage of LED in a single treatment—which means you don’t have to choose between the two. The mask has 60 lasers and 334 LEDs total, spread across multiple wavelengths, and Megelin positions it as the most advanced light-therapy mask on the market thanks to its facial fit, laser technology, and wavelength performance. It’s definitely a premium price point, but considering everything packed into one device, I think the value is there.

How I Used It

Personally, I like to use red light masks at night, after my shower and before my evening skincare routine. I like doing my skincare afterward, because my skin is clean and primed for maximum product absorption. That said, I know plenty of people who prefer to use masks in the mornings, so honestly, whatever fits your schedule works. The one non-negotiable is clean skin before you start.

Megelin recommends using the mask 3-5 times a week for around 10 minutes per session, which is pretty standard for red light treatments overall. When I’m trying a new mask, I usually front-load my usage, so I’ve been using it five times a week. Once I’ve established a routine, I typically dial it back to 3 times a week, which is more sustainable for me long-term.

What I Loved

My absolute favorite thing about this mask is the range of wavelengths and the way the different light technologies work together. There are five wavelengths in total, which is a lot for one device and each one is addressing a different skin concern:

  • 595nm targets pigmentation
  • 630nm supports collagen production
  • 660nm works on fine lines
  • 830nm addresses wrinkles
  • 1064 goes deeper for overall rejuvenation

The laser technology also isn’t just treating my entire face as one big zone. The mask uses three laser zones to target common areas of concern, like forehead lines and crow’s feet, while the different wavelengths address issues like pigmentation and collagen production.

My skin is always changing, day to day, as well as seasonally. And while my overarching concerns are usually fine lines and collagen, some days I want to focus on other things instead. Being able to adjust the treatment as my skin needed made the whole experience feel much more personalized, instead of running the exact same treatment on repeat.

I’m also a fan of the fit. I’ve tried other LED face masks that slipped down my face mid-session and/or had Velcro straps in the back that caught and pinched my hair (long hair girl problems!). Megelin’s mask is molded from a lightweight, flexible silicone that naturally adjusts to different face shapes and stays put. The brand calls this its 3D Contoured Fit Design, which has been validated by more than 10,000 users, and I totally get why.

It has a wide, silicone strap that felt soft and easy to adjust. It didn’t pinch my hair at all, and let me just say that the user-friendly design really makes a difference in the ~10 minutes a day I spend wearing the mask.

A Few Things to Consider

No product is completely perfect (although this one does come close!) so here’s what’s worth knowing before you buy. The mask comes with a small device that houses the battery, and it has to stay connected to the mask for the entire treatment. In practice, this isn’t an issue for me since I mostly use it sitting or lying down, with the cord resting right beside me. But it’s worth noting that it’s not a fully hands-free kind of mask, unless you tuck the device into your pocket while you multitask.

Additionally, my biggest issue with LED masks across the board has been that red light can be pretty harsh on my eyes. Maybe I just have unusually sensitive eyes, but, this one doesn’t come with built-in eye protection. If light sensitivity is a concern for you, it may be worth picking up eye shields or cups for added protection.

My Results & Final Verdict

I’ve only been using the Megelin mask for about two weeks so far, so I can’t really claim any dramatic before and afters here. But I have noticed a slight improvement in some hyperpigmentation on the left side of my face. My fine lines look a little less pronounced, and the biggest difference by far is that my skin just looks brighter and less dull overall.

$499 can feel like a lot to splurge on a face mask, but this one brings advanced light-therapy technology into your routine and it really does feel different from your average LED device. In particular, I love the combination of laser and LED technology, plus the range of wavelengths. If you’ve been on the fence about investing in red light therapy, this mask may just convince you that it’s worth it.
