Gavin Newsom Issues Direct Warning To Donald Trump Over Election Interference
Newsom shared the message on X on Thursday, October 29, amid an increasingly contentious dispute between California and the Trump administration over the state’s election procedures. His announcement comes as the Trump administration continues to challenge California’s handling of mail-in ballots, including an effort to prevent the counting of approximately 20,000 ballots that federal officials claim may have been cast by noncitizens. Federal courts have rejected the administration’s efforts to block the ballots, though the Justice Department has continued pursuing the case.
In his post, Newsom made his position clear, writing, “A warning to Donald Trump: I’m deploying election lawyers to key battleground districts in California to protect every vote. And I just made it a FELONY to illegally seize ballots.” The governor was referring to legislation he signed into law that makes the unlawful seizure of ballots or election records a felony. According to Newsom’s office, the state’s election protection effort will also include more than 800 poll observers and 54 hotline operators, with additional coverage planned for competitive congressional districts.
