Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Harry’s relationship was undoubtedly damaged when he stepped down from his royal duties, and a royal author has revealed that even their phone calls were never the same.
The author shared that after the controversial prince departed the UK with his wife, Meghan Markle, the late queen reportedly wouldn’t answer his phone calls unless she had some kind of “witness” in the room with her. Elizabeth allegedly felt she needed some sort of ‘protection’ or record kept, in case her words were skewed and shared with the world. Read more about the situation below.

Royal Author Says Queen Elizabeth II Wouldn't Answer Prince Harry's Phone Calls Without A 'Witness'
Since the famous redhead prince married former actress Meghan Markle and made the decision for their family to step down from their royal duties in 2020, moving from the UK to California, they caused a big stir with their Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan, about what pushed them to leave, and Harry's tell-all memoir, Spare.
Those projects, as well as their departure in general, evidently changed their relationships with numerous members of the monarchy, including Queen Elizabeth II, before her passing in 2022. It got to the point where the queen allegedly wouldn't even take phone calls from her grandson without caution.
According to his new book Queen Elizabeth II: A Personal History, royal author and friend of the family, Hugo Vickers wrote, "Whenever Prince Harry called his grandmother, she asked her lady-in-waiting to stay with her."
"The distress the Sussexes caused the Queen in the last years of her life cannot be overestimated," he continued.

Queen Elizabeth Reportedly Wanted 'Protection' Whenever She Spoke To Prince Harry
Prior to her passing, royal insiders and others explained that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had caused the monarch a great deal of stress, especially when it came to what they would tell the media about life in the palace.
Therefore, due to their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, Harry's book, etc., whenever the queen would answer phone calls from him, she wanted the lady-in-waiting or some other witness there to 'protect' herself and the royal family's reputation. Additionally, a royal insider told Page Six that she also needed someone to listen in on the conversation to ensure some kind of record was taken.
"The Queen clearly wanted some kind of protection," they said, adding that she needed another person in the room for "moral support and protection [and] to ensure there was a record of what was said."
"I think the Queen was also on her guard with Harry because she was so hurt by what he had done," the source continued.
