If your skin constantly feels tight, flaky, or dull no matter how much moisturizer you use, your diet could be playing a bigger role than you think. Dermatologists say that while skincare products matter, what you eat daily can directly impact how hydrated—and healthy—your skin looks and feels.
Certain popular comfort foods, like potato chips and ramen, may be quietly working against you. Packed with excess sodium, refined carbs, and processed ingredients, these staples can dehydrate your skin from the inside out, weaken collagen, and even contribute to breakouts and irritation over time.

1. Potato Chips
Proper hydration and moisturization are essential for maintaining a healthy complexion and aging gracefully. However, potato chips, with their extremely high salt content, can hinder skin hydration. Consuming them daily or in excess can lead to dryness, cracking, wrinkles, and even peeling, says Sethi.
"Due to osmotic pressure, salt draws water out of cells, including skin cells, leading to dry skin," Sethi explains. "Potato chips are notoriously high in salt and also contain a sizable amount of sugar," she adds.
When there is an excess of salt and glucose in the body, Sethi continues, it cross-links with collagen and elastin, "proteins that give our skin its firmness and elasticity."

2. Ramen
Processed foods, while convenient and often tasty, rarely provide the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants our skin needs to thrive. “A diet made up of mostly processed food is lacking in nutrient and antioxidant rich foods,” says Johna Burdeos, RD. Unfortunately, some of our favorite quick meals—like instant noodles—are no exception.
Dermatologist Elaine F. Kung, MD, says these health risks have direct implications for your skin. “Since people who consume instant noodles are at risk of high blood sugars, high lipids, and metabolic syndrome, they may be more prone to acne, acanthosis nigricans (darkening of skin around the neck or fold areas), and even hair loss,” Kung adds.
The Bottom line
You don’t have to give up your favorite flavors entirely—but swapping them for more skin-friendly options can make a noticeable difference. Instead of salty chips, opt for lightly salted nuts, roasted chickpeas, or air-popped popcorn to satisfy that crunch without the dehydration.
And in place of instant ramen, try homemade noodle bowls with whole ingredients, bone broth, and plenty of vegetables for added hydration and nutrients. Small, consistent upgrades like these can help support smoother, more radiant skin from within.
