Blush has the power to brighten your complexion, add warmth, and make skin look healthier—but according to makeup artists, where you apply it matters just as much as the shade you choose. A few common placement mistakes can unintentionally draw attention to sagging skin, emphasize redness, and even make your face appear less lifted.
Beauty creator and makeup artist JoEllen Woods recently shared a simple blush trick for mature skin, explaining that changing where you apply your blush can instantly create a fresher, more youthful-looking complexion.

Mistake #1: Applying Blush Too Close To Your Nose
The biggest mistake Woods sees is placing blush across the apples of the cheeks and extending it too close to the nose.
"If you're over 40, stop applying blush like this if you want to look more youthful," she says.
Instead of sweeping color across the center of your face, Woods recommends leaving about two finger-widths of space between your nose and where your blush begins.
"This creates lift and gives a youthful flush," she explains. Keeping blush farther out helps draw the eye upward rather than inward, creating the illusion of more sculpted cheekbones.
Mistake #2: Covering The Entire Cheek With Blush
Another common error is applying too much blush over the entire cheek. Rather than diffusing color everywhere, Woods recommends concentrating blush higher on the face and blending it up along the cheekbone.
Applying blush in an upward direction creates a subtle lifting effect that complements the natural contours of the face.
Mistake #3: Accentuating Redness
According to Woods, placing blush too close to the center of the face can have an unintended consequence.
"Applying it too close to your nose makes it look like you're having a hot flash," she says. "Nobody wants that." For women over 40, who may already experience facial redness from rosacea, menopause, or increased skin sensitivity, this placement can exaggerate flushing rather than mimic a healthy glow.

Why Placement Matters As Skin Changes
As we age, facial fat naturally shifts downward and skin gradually loses collagen and elasticity. Makeup artists often recommend lifting techniques—including higher blush placement—to visually counteract those changes. Rather than relying on heavy contour, simply positioning blush higher on the cheekbones can help restore dimension and brightness while making the face appear more lifted.
The Bottom Line
A youthful blush application isn't about wearing more product—it's about putting it in the right place. Makeup artists recommend keeping blush about two finger-widths away from the nose and blending upward along the cheekbones instead of across the center of the cheeks. As Woods puts it, "It's a little change that makes a big impact."
