Bob Woodward Accuses Jeff Bezos Of Compromising The Washington Post's Independence

In his forthcoming memoir, Secrets, Woodward reflects on his decades-long career in journalism, including his work covering the Watergate scandal and his relationship with the billionaire, who purchased The Washington Post in 2013. The book, set to be released on November 24th, also reportedly details the writer's growing distrust of Jeff's leadership of the newspaper.

Woodward writes that he initially felt relieved when Jeff bought the publication, believing he would provide the financial support necessary for its journalists to continue working independently. However, he now accuses the entrepreneur of undermining public trust in the newspaper through his business decisions and relationship with Trump.

"I remember feeling relief when Jeff decided to buy The Post in 2013," he wrote, as reported by The New York Times. "I believed at the time that Bezos would provide the finances for The Post to continue to operate courageously."

Bob Woodward Says Jeff Bezos Is 'Capitulating' To Donald Trump

The journalist's concerns reportedly intensified in 2024, when the e-commerce giant intervened to prevent The Washington Post from endorsing Kamala Harris in the presidential election. The newspaper's editorial board had allegedly already prepared an endorsement, but Jeff announced that the publication would no longer endorse presidential candidates, a decision that Woodward says made it appear as though the billionaire was yielding to Trump.

"Like Bezos and the newspaper were capitulating to Trump," he wrote.

The veteran reporter also criticizes the Amazon founder for remaining publicly silent as Trump continues to attack the press.

"It pains me that Jeff Bezos has remained silent," he continued.

Although Woodward acknowledges that the newspaper's journalists have continued to publish critical reporting on the president, he believes Jeff has failed to defend their work and the importance of independent journalism.

"It is not too late for media owners to prioritize moral courage over financial gain," he added.
