Melania Trump Makes Speech About The White House & Its Renovations
On Wednesday, September 9th, the Slovenian native stepped out for a rare public speaking engagement.
Melania stepped out to make a speech for the press in the White House’s famous Rose Garden as part of the White House Historical Association‘s Presidential Sites Summit. The summit was a three-day event that focused on maintaining the legacy of the historical home, as well as other historical locations across the country. During her speech, the First Lady spoke about the ongoing importance of the building and how she believes she and her husband are maintaining its legacy, subtly hinting at the updates being made, stating they needed to be “worthy of the legacy we pass forward.”
“[The White House] stands as an architectural autobiography of America, embodying the enduring values of ambition, democracy, and civic life through its design, craftsmanship, and the objects within,” she stated. “Design is a meticulous process that involves a multitude of choices—each line, texture, and play of natural light contributes to an overarching narrative. No detail is too small; what may seem insignificant today can influence how individuals connect with one another and perceive their place in history,” she went on. “Within the walls of the White House, these experiences become essential to our national identity.”

Social Media Users Slam Melania's Speech Amid Her Husband's Renovations
The speech quickly caught people's attention across all social media platforms, as one of the more non-policy-related actions of Donald Trump's second term has been the changes he's made to the White House.
Since returning to office in 2025, the president has made a number of alterations to the White House and its grounds, including adding extensive gold accents and more ornate decorations to the Oval Office and other rooms. He also replaced the traditional grass in the Rose Garden with a stone patio and added statues of historical figures, including George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson. Outside, he demolished the East Wing to make way for a planned massive ballroom, one of the largest physical changes to the White House complex in decades.
The backlash over the president's renovations continued after Melania's speech, calling out the hypocrisy they saw in the situation.
"The White House will never be the same after the destruction of the east wing, the cement in the rose garden and the gaudy gold everywhere," commented an Instagram user.
"Your husband has destroyed it," wrote another.
"So you destroy parts of it and make it lame and tacky like yourself?" a user asked. "How is that preserving history?"
"Your husband stuck gold pasties everywhere," added another.
