As we age, many of us find ourselves searching for makeup techniques that enhance our features without settling into fine lines or looking overly heavy. According to beauty expert and makeup artist Nikol Johnson, the secret to a youthful, lifted appearance isn’t piling on more products—it’s strategically using makeup to brighten, define, and lift.

In a recent YouTube tutorial, Johnson revealed what she calls a simple “1-2-3 Face Trick” for mature skin, a method designed to create a fresher, more radiant complexion in just a few steps. The technique focuses on correcting discoloration, lifting facial features, and adding subtle dimension without relying on heavy foundation or dramatic contouring.

Step 1: Brighten and Correct

Johnson says the first step to a more youthful appearance is addressing pigmentation and discoloration.

“If you want a lifted face, you need to lift that color first,” she explains.

Rather than layering on full-coverage foundation, Johnson recommends using targeted color correctors to neutralize dark circles, redness, and hyperpigmentation. Peach-toned correctors can help counteract blue and purple undertones under the eyes, while green correctors can minimize redness around the nose and cheeks.

By creating a more even skin tone before applying complexion products, the face immediately appears brighter and more awake.

Step 2: Lift the Eyes

One of Johnson’s biggest anti-aging makeup tips involves the eyes.

Instead of relying on heavy eyeliner—which can sometimes make mature eyes appear smaller—she recommends focusing on lifted lashes and strategic mascara placement.

Her trick? Curl the lashes first, then concentrate mascara at the roots rather than the tips.

“Everything’s always lifting,” Johnson says. “Past your 40s, but especially in your 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond, we want to lift.”

Applying mascara at the base of the lashes creates the illusion of subtle eyeliner while keeping the eyes looking open and fresh. She also suggests using soft bronzy tones on the lids rather than dark shadows to create warmth and brightness.

Step 3: Create Soft Dimension

The final step is adding dimension to the face using cream products.

Johnson recommends swapping powder formulas for creams whenever possible, as they move with the skin and help maintain a natural-looking glow. She uses a simple “three” pattern when applying bronzer: sweeping product across the forehead, under the cheekbones, and along the jawline.

The result is subtle definition without harsh lines.

Blush is then applied slightly higher on the cheeks to create a lifted effect, while a soft cream highlighter adds radiance without emphasizing texture or wrinkles.

Don’t Forget the Brows and Lips

According to Johnson, youthful-looking makeup doesn’t stop at the complexion.

She advises brushing brows upward and lightly filling sparse areas to frame the face. For lips, a natural-looking liner can restore lost definition and create the appearance of fuller lips.

“As a mature woman, we lose that definition,” she explains. “We need to define the lips.”

The Bottom Line

Johnson's "1-2-3 Face Trick" proves that achieving a youthful glow after 50 doesn't require a complicated routine. By focusing on correcting discoloration, lifting the eyes, and strategically adding dimension, mature skin can look radiant, fresh, and naturally rejuvenated.

The best part? The technique relies on lightweight products and simple application methods, making it easy to recreate whether you're heading to brunch, the office, or a special event.
