Hyland explains that many people still rely on outdated eyeliner placement that doesn’t fully enhance the eye shape. One of the biggest mistakes, she notes, is not lining the eyes correctly from corner to corner.
“If you’re going to use an eyeliner, make sure that you’re going right around the eye,” she says in the video, pointing out that leaving the inner and outer corners bare can actually make the eyes appear smaller and more aged.
Instead, she recommends working as close to the lash line as possible and ensuring the liner is applied evenly around the eye for a more balanced, lifted effect.
Why Black Liner May Be Too Harsh
Another key tip Hyland shares is to rethink the shade of eyeliner being used—especially during daytime looks.
“Black can be very harsh on your complexion, especially in the day,” she explains, suggesting that softer brown tones can be more flattering and natural-looking.
Brown liner, she adds, helps define the eyes without creating the same stark contrast that can sometimes emphasize fine lines or under-eye shadows.

She further emphasizes blending eyeshadow upward rather than stopping at the crease. Instead of keeping color low, she recommends bringing it higher toward the brow bone to create a more lifted, youthful appearance.
Using circular blending motions, she explains, can soften the overall look while enhancing dimension and brightness around the eyes.
