The young actor has been receiving a lot of backlash after the internet was outraged when he said “no one cares” about certain artistic mediums like “ballet and opera” during a recent podcast interview. The comments, which were related to what he wants to do with his career, triggered worldwide outrage, and not only did numerous fellow celebrities respond, but even world-famous institutions. Timothée Chalamet Says' No One Cares' About Ballet & Opera In A New Podcast Interview

One of the biggest faces in the entertainment industry, and this year's awards season in particular, is none other than the 30-year-old actor. During his ongoing press tour for his Oscar-nominated film and role, Marty Supreme, he stopped by the University of Texas at Austin to be interviewed by fellow actor Matthew McConaughey.

The pair spoke about numerous topics related to the film industry, which was when the conversation shifted towards how filmmakers are having to adjust their methods to encourage audiences to continue paying attention. That's when Timothée weighed in and began talking about films that have managed to keep people's attention despite their pacing before comparing them to two other popular media.

"Some people do want to be entertained and quickly," he said. "I admire people, and I've done it myself, who go on a talk show and say, 'Hey, we've got to keep movie theaters alive, we've gotta keep this genre alive,' and another part of me feels like if people want to see it ― like Barbie, like Oppenheimer, ― they're going to go see it."

"I don't want to be working in ballet or opera or things where it's like, 'Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore,'" he continued. "All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I just took shots for no reason."

The Internet Slams Timothée's Comments

It didn't take long for the interview, specifically clips containing the New York-native's comments about ballet and opera, to go viral, and for numerous internet users and those who work in those fields to respond to what he had to say.

From other celebrities like Doja Cat and Whoopi Goldberg to Grammy-winning opera singer Isabelle Leonard and Megan Fairchild, a principal dancer with New York City Ballet, numerous people from all backgrounds and those who work in the two art forms he mentioned have had responses to his comments.

Though there are some of his fans defending him, believing that people are taking what he said the wrong way, they are loudly being drowned out by those who thought what he said was "disrespectful" and uncalled for.

"Live theatre, opera, ballet could always use the support of artists with such reach," wrote opera singer Eugenia Forteza under a clip of the actor on Instagram. "Choosing to further continue the misconception that these artforms are dead is irresponsible, disrespectful, and ignorant, especially from someone who had the privilege to attend an arts high school right next to Lincoln Center."

"I'm just saying, be careful, boy," Whoopi Goldberg warned during a recent episode of The View. "He is a boy to me. He's a boy to me. So no disrespect. And, really, don't apologize when you've insulted, because it doesn't sound right. You know, you can't say, 'Oh, this is dumb, no disrespect.' That's absolute disrespect."

"He's one of the most insufferable fake deep pseudo intellectuals out there," wrote an angry X user. "You're always crying about wanting to be one of the greats in your art and your craft, but you turn around and disrespect other art disciplines. An absolute loser."

The Complete Unknown performer has yet to respond to the backlash his comments have received from thousands of people around the world, and many are waiting on the edge of their seats to see how he's going to address the situation, and maybe if he'll wait to do it until this weekend's Academy Awards.
