Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is standing by her support for transgender athletes, explaining that being a “girl’s girl” means standing up for all women and girls. However, her comments have sparked backlash from Republicans on social media, and many have not held back from coming down on her, particularly on X. Keep reading for more information.

AOC Says She Supports Trans Athletes
AOC recently traveled to Portland, Maine, to campaign for Democratic Senate candidate Troy Jackson, who is challenging Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the upcoming midterm elections. On Thursday, October 22, the New York congresswoman participated in a town hall hosted by progressive campus group More Perfect University, where students had the opportunity to ask questions about a range of political issues.
During the event, a transgender student from the University of Southern Maine asked Ocasio-Cortez what she would say to transgender Americans who feel abandoned by the Democratic Party and believe their rights have become a political liability. The congresswoman pushed back against the idea that Democrats should distance themselves from the transgender community, arguing that compromising the rights of transgender people threatens everyone's rights.
"I don't support the rights of trans people just to protect my own rights, but I support the rights of trans women because I'm a girl's girl," she said, adding that everyone's bodily autonomy is connected.

Social Media Reactions
Despite AOC's clear intention to champion the marginalized group, Republicans on X were hellbent on bringing her down. "Placating people's delusions has to stop," one person wrote. "It's wrong and it's also quite sick."
"That's disgusting to a woman!" wrote another.
"I always say only the worst women you'll ever meet in your entire life say 'girl's girl,'" reads another comment.
"She's not a girl's girl," agreed another. "She's a vicious opportunist."
"Yeah, no someone needs to reset her brain," wrote the next. "I'm positive. She's going the wrong direction on purpose."
"The less I hear about this woman the better," a final user wrote.
