Miley Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter started dating almost immediately after Miley publicly split from Liam Hemsworth in early August 2019.

And although the two only dated for about 6 weeks before calling it quits, there was a lot for fans to talk about in that short time–not to mention their steamy pictures from their Lake Como getaway.

“Rock the boat” is an understatement.

Carter added fuel to the fire by penning an essay for Elle that fall, describing how her relationship with Miley went from friends to something more romantic. At the time, she wrote, "This past July, I went on vacation with a female friend; the next thing I knew, I was in love with her. Until that trip, it had never crossed my mind that I was even capable of loving a woman the way I loved her...I fell just as hard for her as I had the older man so many years before."

She explained, "It was that same familiar force of nature; I didn’t have to think about a thing or overanalyze. It just happened and it felt exactly right. Reflecting back on our three-year friendship, I realized I’d always been drawn to her in a way I wasn’t with other friends, but until that trip it had never crossed my mind to think of her in a romantic sense."

For her part, Miley has kept pretty quiet about that particular relationship--but fans think she's started opening up with her latest Plastic Hearts album.

Specifically, there's a lot of speculation around the inspiration for third track on Cyrus' album, "Angels Like You."

The lyrics are: "I know that you're wrong for me / Gonna wish we never met on the day I leave I brought you down to your knees / 'Cause they say that misery loves company / It's not your fault I ruin everything / And it's not your fault I can't be what you need / Baby, angels like you can't fly down here with me / I'll put you down slow, love you goodbye / Before you let go, just one more time / Take off your clothes, pretend that it's fine / A little more hurt won't kill you / Tonight mama says you don't look happy / Close your eyes."

Miley fans think that the complicated relationship in the song is based off of the quick-paced and short-lived relationship between Cyrus and Carter.

Fans took to Twitter to discuss their theories.

However, some fans think the song is referring to her ex-husband, arguing that she started writing it before dating Kaitlynn.

Even with that in mind, some fans are sticking to the Kaitlynn theory, especially considering how Cyrus portrays Hemsworth in other songs throughout the album.
