Donald Trump has said a lot of questionable things in interviews, on social media, and during speeches, but his newest take on Greenland might be perhaps the strangest. In an interview with The New York Times, the president said revealed not only that he would like to take “ownership” over Greenland, but also that it was “psychology important” to him to do so. Donald Trump Wants 'Ownership of Greenland'

Trump has recently insisted that America needs to take ownership of Greenland for security reasons. Last week, Trump sat down with NYT and was asked why he didn't just send American troops to Greenland if it was so important to him to fend off foreign threats—the terms of a Cold War-era agreement allows Americans to send troops to the country. But Trump responded saying that he wouldn't feel comfortable unless he had direct ownership.

When questioned why it's so important to him, he answered, "Because that’s what I feel is psychologically needed for success. I think that ownership gives you a thing that you can’t do, whether you’re talking about a lease or a treaty. Ownership gives you things and elements that you can’t get from just signing a document, that you can have a base."

Kate House correspondent Katie Rogers chimed in, asking if it was psychologically important to him or to the United States, to which he replied, "Psychologically important for me. Now, maybe another president would feel differently, but so far I’ve been right about everything."

Social Media Reactions

Across social media platforms, users were dumbfounded by Trump's answers, calling him "absolutely unhinged" and "deranged." One user even pointed out that Trump posted a picture of himself claiming he is "The Acting President of Venezuela," and called him "the modern American version of Hitler."

"Annexing Greenland is a vanity project for Trump, just like his ballroom," one Twitter user wrote. "Neither are needed for the American people. Both are needed, in his view, for his personal legacy."

"This is absurd," another person wrote. "This is what he's spending his time and resources on?"

"Every day I think he can't do something even more dumb than he already has and every day he proves me wrong," said a fourth person.
