Prior to the White House correspondents' dinner, Jimmy Kimmel delivered a monologue about the event, imagining himself as the M.C. Pretending to address Melania Trump, Kimmel said, "Of course, our first lady, Melania, is here. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow."
A joke pertaining to Donald Trump's age and health, the joke might've been funny in the moment. Unfortunately, days later at the actual White House correspondents' dinner, a gunman broke past a security perimeter at the event, reportedly with plans to assassinate the president. Naturally, in retrospect, Kimmel's joke was quite untimely.
Donald Trump & Melania Trump Call Out Kimmel
Today, both Melania Trump and Donald Trump responded to Kimmel's monologue, and were equally appalled by his joke. In rare form, Melania took to X to slam the comedian. "Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn’t comedy- his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America," she wrote. "People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate."
"A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him. Enough is enough," she continued. "It is time for ABC to take a stand. How many times will ABC’s leadership enable Kimmel’s atrocious behavior at the expense of our community."
Donald Trump, too, called out Jimmy Kimmel, calling his monologue "really shocking."I appreciate that so many people are incensed by Kimmel's despicable call to violent, and normally would not be responsive to anything that he said but, this is something far beyond the pale," Trump wrote on Truth Social., "Jimmy Kimmel should be immediately fired by Disney and ABC."
