An urgent and serious recall was made after it was discovered that numerous loaves of bread were sitting in grocery stores with glass fragments on top of them.
It’s hard to imagine what it must have been like for any customers who came across the contaminated loaves, as biting into a slice of this bread could cause serious mouth injuries and other damage. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a report that a whopping 818 cases of bread from Upper Crust Bakery LP were suspected of containing glass fragments and needed to be recalled in six states. The FDA Reports A Recall Of Over 800 Cases Of Bread With Glass Fragments Found Inside
In mid-April, the FDA initiated a 'Class II' recall of 818 cases of bread from Upper Crust Bakery LP, a bakery located in Maryland, after a report stated that "glass fragments" were found in the bread. According to their report, the bakery notified them of the issue on April 12th. Three specific bread products from the bakery, which distributes their products to grocery stores in several states, were affected, including their 'Ancient Grains Hoagie Rolls,' 'Multigrain Sourdough,' and 'Whole Grain Multigrain' bread. They were sold frozen and packaged in corrugated paper cartons.
According to the FDA's website, a Class II recall is defined as "a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."
While they did not specify just how big the glass fragments were or how this alarming issue occurred, the FDA report notes that the bread had to be recalled in six states, including Pennsylvania, California, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware, and Ohio. The FDA and the bakery recalled Lot #90 and Lot #92 of the bread products, as even though there may not have been glass fragments in every single loaf, it's typical for the entire lot to be discarded for safety measures.
What To Do About The Bread Recall
Despite the recall being labeled as Class II and involving "temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences," it's still a wise idea to check your store-bought bread loaves to be safe. As the National Capitol Poison Center noted, swallowing a tiny piece of glass may not cause any major issues, but "chewing glass can cut the mouth."
"If a big piece of glass or one with sharp edges is swallowed, it can cause injury to the throat and gut," they continued.
"Symptoms may include chest or abdominal pain, blood in stool, bloated abdomen, and fever."
If you purchased or fear you may have bought one of these bread items during the recall, it's wise to call your doctor if you experience any of those symptoms. In the meantime, the FDA advises customers to safely dispose of the bread loaves or return them to where they were purchased for a refund, as the recall is still ongoing.
