You’ve been doing all the right things you need to do to lose weight: exercise, get plenty of sleep and eat healthily—or so you think. Unfortunately, even though they seem healthy, there are some “healthy” foods and beverages that may be slowing your metabolism.

Frozen Meals

Frozen meals are helpful when you don’t have time for meal prep but need to keep your portions in check. Most dieters will reach for meals with the least amount of fat and calories as possible. Frozen meals that are less than 300 calories may actually be too low in calories for many people. Not getting enough calories throughout the day will cause metabolism to slow. Plus, many frozen meals are loaded with sodium. If you plan to purchase frozen meals to help with portion control, look for ones that are reduced-sodium or heart-healthy and have enough calories to keep you satisfied until the next meal.

Tap Water

Staying hydrated will not only help your metabolism but it can help you feel full between meals. But if you are drinking straight from the tap, you could be hindering your metabolism. Regular tap water contains fluoride and chlorine. Studies indicate that these two chemicals have been discovered to interfere with normal thyroid function. Play it safe and filter your tap water before drinking it.

Non-Organic Produce

Still think organic produce isn’t worth the extra cost? Yes, organic produce tends to be smaller due to not having the extra chemicals to boost their growth. However, on average, organic produce contains higher concentrations of antioxidants than conventionally grown produce. The bigger the non-organic fruit or vegetable means you are typically getting fewer good-for-you nutrients and more calories per bite. A study published in the Journal of Medical Toxicology indicated that pesticides from non-organic fruits and vegetables actually caused metabolic changes. If your budget doesn’t allow you to splurge on organic produce all the time, just make sure you are at least avoiding the dirty dozen.

Soybean oil

Soybean oil

Although fat is getting a better reputation in the diet world, Americans still consume far too much omega-6 fats than needed. Omega-6 fatty acids are found in soybean oil and vegetable oils used in many foods. A diet rich in omega-6 can raise blood pressure and other heart-related diseases and makes you retain water. It can also lead to insulin resistance. A balance of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty is needed in order to protect your hearts, joints, pancreas, skin, and metabolism.
