If you have naturally thin lips, the right makeup techniques can make a huge difference in creating the illusion of a fuller, more balanced pout. According to pro makeup artist Laura Barrow, it’s less about dramatically overlining your lips and more about understanding how color, texture, and light visually affect shape and volume.
In a recent TikTok demo, Barrow explained that some of the most common lip products people reach for can actually make thin lips appear even smaller.

Avoid Dark Matte Lipsticks
According to Barrow, dark shades and ultra-matte formulas are the biggest mistakes for smaller lips because darker colors visually “recede” features.
“Dark colors recede things so push things backwards, therefore making things appear smaller,” she explained.
Matte finishes can also flatten the lips by removing shine and dimension, which emphasizes thinness instead of fullness. While deep berry or brown lip colors may be trendy, they can make lips look more compressed if there’s no reflective finish to balance them out.
Do Slightly Overline Your Lips
Instead of harshly overdrawing the lips, Barrow recommends “cheating the border” subtly by tracing just along the edge where the lip ends and the skin begins.
Using a neutral-toned lip liner like Rimmel Cappuccino, she demonstrated how softly widening and lifting the lip shape can instantly create more volume without looking obvious.
The trick is to stay close to your natural lip line while slightly extending the corners and cupid’s bow for a fuller effect.
Use Shine To Your Advantage
One of the easiest ways to make thin lips appear bigger is by using glossy, light-reflective products. Unlike matte textures, glosses and lip oils catch light and visually pull the lips forward.
“Light reflection—so shiny glitter particles, pearlescent particles—pull things forward,” Barrow said. “That’s where the trickery is at play.” She recommends applying a glossy lip oil or reflective lipstick mainly to the center of the lips to create dimension and make them appear plumper instantly.

The Best Lip Products For Thin Lips
If you want to enhance thinner lips, makeup artists generally recommend:
- Satin or glossy lipstick formulas
- Lip oils and hydrating glosses
- Nude pinks, rosy mauves, and soft peach shades
- Neutral lip liners slightly deeper than your natural lip tone
- Reflective finishes instead of flat mattes
Ultimately, creating fuller-looking lips comes down to optical illusion. By combining strategic liner placement with lighter, shinier products, you can make thin lips appear noticeably more voluminous without fillers or invasive treatments.
