If you’re embarking on a weight loss journey, you might think that eating as few calories as possible is the secret to your dream body—and oftentimes, skipping breakfast is one of the easiest ways to keep that calorie consumption at an all-time low. But as it turns out, this is an extremely harmful habit. Not only do highly restrictive diets come with a plethora of health risks, but skipping breakfast, in particular, can make it more difficult to lose weight in the long run.

Regularly failing to nourish your body with a healthy morning meal can lead to poor hormone health, damage your gut, throw your blood sugar out of whack, and, ultimately, stand between you and the flat belly of your dreams. We spoke to health experts to learn about the impact of this common but detrimental morning habits. Read on for all of their warnings and advice.

Skipping breakfast can impact stress hormones

Intermittent fasting and skipping meals has become increasingly popular, but Heba Abdelnabi, MS, RD, CDN, CDCES emphasizes that it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution—especially for women with blood sugar instability or high stress levels.

"While intermittent fasting works for some, others—especially those with blood sugar instability may experience cortisol spikes and afternoon crashes," Abdelnabi says.

For some women, skipping breakfast can lead to increased stress hormones, irritability, and intense hunger later in the day—inadvertently standing in the way of your weight loss goals.

"Individualize timing based on energy levels, stress, and metabolic health," Abdelnabi advises. Even a small, balanced breakfast—like avocado toast with eggs or a smoothie with protein—can help stabilize blood sugar, support hormone health, and support more sustainable weight loss.

Skipping breakfast can damage gut health

Functional medicine dietitian Meg Gerber further emphasizes breakfast's role in managing stress levels and blood sugar. "It is critical that we make time for breakfast as it helps us manage our stress levels and break our overnight fasting," she says.

She also highlights the impact it can have on gut health. "If we do not eat our breakfast, our body registers this as unsafe and therefore does not prioritize gut repair, optimal digestion, and health hormone output," Gerber warns. "By not eating, it turns down the dial of metabolism to protect itself and can cause sluggish digestion." Digestion is a major factor in weight management; when your gut is off track, your whole body is off track, making it more difficult to shed those pounds.

Again, that means a quick breakfast whenever possible is an absolute necessity if you want to keep your gut health (and your overall health) in order–but of course, the quality of the breakfast is also important. Processed, high-sugar foods made with refined carbs (which are popular, convenient options) can also do damage to your digestive system.

Luckily, though, there are plenty of other, healthier choices when it comes to breakfast. For example, you can go with some fruit, a bowl of yogurt and granola, or some whole grain toast with avocado. Overall, you should prioritize whole grains, protein, and fiber. This will not only promote a healthy gut, but will also keep you fuller longer in order to help you on your weight loss journey.

The Bottom Line

At the end of the day, of course, your health is personal to you–which means that if you’re experiencing ongoing issues or struggling to lose weight, the best course of action is to speak to a doctor to get down to the bottom of things and figure out your specific needs. However, ensuring you’re eating a healthy breakfast each morning is just one of the things you can do to keep your gut as healthy as possible.
