For years, people have been told that the items sold in fast food restaurants are not very healthy, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the cravings for them stop completely.
Fast food can be a savior for some people, whether they’re too busy to cook, need something in a pinch, or simply are craving something that only a drive-thru can satisfy. While most people are told fast food should never be consumed if trying to lose weight, there are a select few items from most major chains that are lower in calories and higher in protein than others, and enjoying these items in moderation is likely not disrupt any progress. Read more about four of those foods below.

1. Cantina Chicken Bowl from Taco Bell
Taco Bell is a great place to go when you are in need of a little Mexican food and either don't feel like cooking it or don't have a Mexican restaurant in your town. While there are a lot of high-fat, calorie-dense items on their menu, they do offer some that taste fresher and are a bit lighter overall, like their Cantina Chicken Bowl.
"The Cantina Chicken Bowl is one of the most balanced options at Taco Bell," says registered dietitian Kathleen Benson, CSSD, CPT, RDN at VNutrition. "It comes with lean protein, beans, avocado, and veggies. The combination of protein alongside fiber helps make this option one that will help keep you feeling fuller, for a longer time, and contributes to daily protein and fiber goals."

2. Spinach, Feta & Egg White Wrap from Starbucks
Starbucks has a lot more on its menu than some realize, and while there are more indulgent, cheesy, and meaty breakfast items on its menu, the Spinach, Feta, & Egg White Wrap has stellar nutrition levels while also providing a savory and flavorful experience.
"The Spinach, Feta & Egg White Wrap at Starbucks is a great option for a lighter breakfast that still promotes fullness with 20g protein and a supportive amount of carbohydrates and fats - all needed for a balanced meal that's quick and easy to grab," adds Benson.

3. Apple Pecan Salad from Wendy's
When going through the Wendy's drive-thru, it can be really hard to resist ordering one of their cheeseburgers or chicken sandwiches. Although ordering a salad from a fast food joint might not sound very fun, Wendy's is famous for making their salads satisfying, fresh, and tasty.
"The Apple Pecan Salad at Wendy's is a great option that provides over 30g of protein and 5g of fiber for a filling meal," explains Benson. "The fat in the cheese also provides staying power to this option. It's a great way if you're looking to increase fruit and veggie intake and also need something quick."

4. Egg McMuffin
McDonald's breakfast is a coveted thing in the food industry, and lucky for those who love it, as Benson notes, it's not a bad choice when it comes to ordering from the classic burger restaurant.
"The classic Egg McMuffin is a helpful go-to if you need to grab a quick breakfast at McDonald's," says Benson. "It combines protein from the egg and Canadian bacon, carbohydrates from the English muffin, and fat from butter and American cheese for a filling, smaller breakfast option."
