Heidi Klum may have found a clever way to work around the Cannes Film Festival’s strict dress code. The supermodel stunned on the red carpet in a two-piece ensemble that created the illusion of a sheer, barely-there gown while still technically staying within the event’s fashion rules.
The Cannes Film Festival is known for enforcing a highly formal black-tie dress code for evening gala screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière. Organizers have strict restrictions in place that prohibit “naked” dresses, visible nudity, sneakers, and oversized gowns with dramatic trains that could disrupt seating and foot traffic on the carpet.

Heidi Klum Wears A Semi-Sheer Two-Piece Dress At Cannes
While attending the premiere of Fjord, the German supermodel stepped onto the red carpet in a custom look by Monique Lhuillier. The ensemble featured a strapless corset-style top with a sweetheart neckline paired with a matching floor-length skirt, both crafted from gold hand-embroidered lace.
The intricate floral detailing layered over a sheer blush-toned base created an almost second-skin illusion, making the outfit resemble a nude gown from afar. She elevated the glamorous look even further with a white crème taffeta opera coat featuring dramatic puffed sleeves and a long flowing train. The mom of four completed the ensemble with soft middle-parted hair and a coordinating gold necklace.
Although Cannes rules prohibit nudity and sheer looks without opaque lining underneath for “decency reasons,” Klum appeared to cleverly toe the line with the illusion design.

Heidi Klum Breaks Cannes Dress Code Back In 2025
This also isn’t the first time the Project Runway host has seemingly pushed the boundaries of Cannes fashion guidelines. Last year, she made headlines during the screening and opening ceremony for Partir Un Jour (Leave One Day) on May 13 when she arrived in a dramatic gown by Elie Saab.
The strapless pink dress featured cascading layers of organza designed to resemble blooming flowers, along with a daring thigh-high slit and an elegant train. Fans online questioned whether the look complied with the festival’s dress code, with one Instagram user commenting under Elie Saab’s post, “What happened to no long trains?”
Typically, Cannes-approved attire for women includes long evening gowns, elegant cocktail dresses, classic little black dresses, or sophisticated pantsuits. Men are generally expected to wear a traditional tuxedo or formal dinner jacket complete with a mandatory bow tie.
