If you’ve been trying to boost your metabolism without overhauling your entire routine, your nighttime habits might be the missing piece. What you do in the hours before bed can directly impact how your body burns calories, regulates blood sugar, and recovers overnight. The good news? Small, consistent changes can make a noticeable difference in as little as 30 days. From choosing smarter snacks to sipping the right beverages, a few simple bedtime habits can help support a healthier metabolism while also improving your sleep quality.

Avoid Processed, High-Fat Snacks

Late-night indulgences such as ice cream are probably one of the most popular bedtime snack options. However, as comforting as it is to eat a tub of ice cream while sitting on the couch watching your favorite show, it’s not so great for your metabolism, sleep, or weight. Ice cream is loaded with sugar and fat, which can negatively impact both metabolism and sleep.

Dr. Kubanych Takyrbashev, MD, Health & Wellness Advisor at NAO, elaborates and says, "I know ice cream is a comforting treat, but it is high in both sugar and fat, which can lead to weight gain over time."

He further adds, "The combination of these two can spike blood sugar levels, causing a crash later that might disturb your sleep. Poor sleep quality can further exacerbate metabolic issues, as sleep is crucial for the body's recovery and metabolic regulation."

Chips and crackers are another poor choice for a bedtime treat. Many of the chips and crackers we buy are usually made with refined carbs, unhealthy fats, and high levels of sodium. The sodium content leads to water retention, ultimately leading to bloating. The blood sugar levels spike up due to the refined carbs, which can slow down your metabolism overnight.

"These items usually contain a lot of processed carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates, which can bring about inflammation and disturb the body’s metabolism even as one sleeps," Michael O. McKinney, MD, physician at Healthy Outlook, notes.

Drink Decaf Green Tea

With every sip, green tea provides a plethora of health benefits—from promoting glowing skin, assisting gut health, and helping you lose weight fast. This is because green tea is a detox tea with high antioxidant contents that can help you target your weight loss goals in a healthy way.

"Detox teas can be a great beverage to consume before bedtime to speed up metabolism and fat burning," she explains. "Some of the more popular and effective detox teas are those with a high antioxidant content," Jay Cowin, NNCP, RNT, RNC, CHN, CSNA, registered nutritionist and Director of Formulations at ASYSTEM, agrees.

Drinking tea before sleep is one of the "best choices" you could make if you're still feeling hungry but want to wind down, he adds. Specifically, decaffeinated green tea is a "healthy beverage that can help you reduce weight effectively." Cowin says it is the "best option if you're looking to cut down on caffeine intake before bed." A consistent and regular sleep schedule is crucial for weight loss (learn about four healthy habits for better sleep!).

Stick to a Consistent Sleep Schedule

One of the most overlooked habits for improving metabolism is maintaining a regular sleep routine. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day helps regulate your body’s internal clock, which plays a key role in metabolism and hormone balance.

Inconsistent sleep can disrupt hormones that control hunger and energy use, making it harder for your body to burn calories efficiently. Prioritizing a steady sleep schedule not only improves rest but also supports long-term metabolic health.
