Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently spoke at a congressional campaign rally in Tennessee, where it seemed that, as she was trying to appeal to the southern crowd, she unexpectedly put on a southern accent.
The famous representative made a passionate speech at Justin J. Pearson’s rally in Memphis, Tennessee, for his congressional campaign on July 17th. As she spoke about issues pertaining to Americans in that area, as well as why they should vote for him, her voice changed as she seemed to take on a bit of a southern accent. In clips of her speech shared on social media, users began commenting on her “new accent,” with a few almost being too stunned for words. Read more about her speech and viral accent clip below.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Speaks During Justin J. Pearson’s Rally In Memphis
There are so many political figures making waves and headlines these days, and one of those is U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has been representing New York’s 14th Congressional District since 2019.
The congresswoman has been especially popular with a younger crowd, often being featured in viral clips or making buzzworthy posts of her own on social media. However, a recent clip went viral that she might not have seen coming. On July 17th, she traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, to campaign at a rally for Tennessee state Rep. Justin J. Pearson, who is running for Tennessee’s 9th Congressional District seat in a Democratic primary challenge against Rep. Steve Cohen.
During her speech, she got the crowd fired up with her change in tone and began declaring, “We cannot afford to leave Tennessee behind. We cannot afford to leave Kentucky behind, Alabama behind, Mississippi behind, Georgia behind, South Carolina behind.”
@aoc When we wake up, we fight for guaranteed healthcare for every American. When we wake up, we realize all that money we’re spending on bombs abroad could be spent on schools right here. So yeah, they’re calling us too woke because we’re realizing the math isn’t adding up. #AOC ♬ original sound – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Social Media Users Call Out AOC For Seemingly Putting On A ‘New Accent’ During Her Speech
After she spoke at the rally, her speech was filmed and uploaded to social media for her followers and prospective voters to watch.
However, it didn’t take long for the speech to go viral, not necessarily for its content, but for the way she was speaking during it. On social media platforms like X, users began accusing the New Yorker of putting on a sort of faux Southern “new accent,” clipping the section of her speech where she was naming the various Southern states. On X, users teased her and expressed their surprise, causing the clip to go viral.
“Why do politicians do this?” asked an X user. “Like we know where you’re from. Why put on this cringe, bad accent, and performance?”
“Like, I’m speechless,” responded another.
One user called the incident “so embarrassing for so many reasons,” as another commented, “Stop it, this can’t be real.”
“AOC really connects with the crowd wherever she goes,” wrote one user.
“Stop hating, don’t you know she’s from the south?” joked another. “South Bronx.”
