There's no one more guilty than myself of going straight for a fitted black tee whenever I need to throw something together quickly. The little black tee may be even more versatile than its sassier sister, the LBD, but no matter how many cuts and weaves I own, I always find myself reaching for the basic—and boring!—crewneck capped sleeve version. That's why this summer, I'm putting all my black tees out of reach and replacing them with a closet full of sweet eyelet tops (starting with the Romeo & Juliet Couture trapeze top , above, for $78). Eyelet goes swimmingly with denim and all those colored crops I'll be wearing this season, too. Plus, eyelet is incredibly lightweight and breathable, not to mention I won't be a walking target for the sun's glaring rays. If you're ready to make the swap, maybe you'd like to start with three of my personal picks:
Get some sun on those shoulders with this girly babydoll-style tank from Jones New York Sport ($78). Pair this cute top with black skinny capris and ballet flats for an ultra-feminine look.
Ready to get a little risqué? Eyelet doesn't have to be demure, and pairing a lacy, racy cami under this Liz Claiborne splitneck top ($47) proves it. (If you're more modest, a beach-ready bikini would work just fine, too.)
Preppify things just a bit with Kensie's four-button eyelet topper ($98), a kicky little coatlet that works well with skirts (think '50s-style full, with heels) and dressier trousers. Or, throw it on over a bright-hued jersey dress for an al fresco dinner date.
