Oscar de la Renta is facing backlash after dressing Usha Vance for a White House state dinner honoring Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan.

The Second Lady shared a photo of her look alongside her husband, Vice President JD Vance, ahead of the formal event.

Usha, who recently welcomed her fourth child, wore a custom strapless column gown covered in gold bugle beads and finished with an Encolure repliée neckline.

The 40-year-old kept the rest of her look relatively understated, styling her hair in a side part and accessorizing with simple stud earrings.

Oscar de la Renta Under Fire For Dressing Usha Vance

While the gown itself received little criticism, some Oscar de la Renta followers took issue with the fashion house choosing to dress Usha for the high-profile event.

“This is disappointing,” one person wrote beneath the designer’s Instagram post.

“You put the fashion in fascism,” another commenter said.

“Oh. Well, there’s another brand I’m unfollowing lol,” someone else wrote, while another added, “Thanks, I just unfollowed.”

Another commenter argued that the designer’s decision to dress political figures sends a message about the brand, writing, “Who you dress and share by choice says everything about your values.”

Some users acknowledged that they liked the gown while still criticizing the decision to dress Usha.

“The dress is gorgeous. From the house of an immigrant. The irony is poetry,” one person wrote.

Another commenter said, “No … not this administration and the harm they are causing.”

One user added, "yeah i'm boycotting."

Oscar de la Renta's History With Trump Administration Women

Oscar de la Renta has a long history of dressing high-profile political figures, including members of the Trump family and administration. The fashion house was notably involved in events surrounding Donald Trump’s January 2025 inauguration.

Ivanka Trump wore several custom Oscar de la Renta designs during inauguration weekend, including a camel-colored cashmere coat with floral detailing for a visit to Arlington National Cemetery and an off-the-shoulder gown embellished with crystals and pearls for the Inaugural Candlelight Dinner.

Usha has also worn the label previously, including a custom black velvet strapless gown with asymmetric floral accents for a vice presidential dinner.

The fashion house, currently led by creative directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, has also dressed prominent Democratic figures, reflecting its history of working with political figures across party lines.
