This post was written prior to the heartbreaking news of Meghan Markle & Prince Harry’s miscarriage loss. Our hearts go out to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at this difficult time.

Social media etiquette in 2020 states that you should always wish a loved one ‘Happy Birthday’ on Instagram. But Meghan Markle and Prince Harry didn’t seem to get the memo this year when the couple failed to publicly wish his father, Prince Charles, a happy birthday on November 14.

The pair have been in the middle of a royal rift with the rest of the family ever since their decision to resign from the royal family on April 1. While everything is not always as it appears, it’s hard to deny the stark contrast between their relationship with the palace, and Kate Middleton and Prince William’s.

The Official Royal Family Instagram account wished Prince Charles a happy birthday first, with Kate and Prince William following shortly after with a post they captioned, “Wishing a very Happy Birthday to His Royal Highness The Prince Of Wales!” Although the Sussex Royal Instagram was deactivated back in March, no public form of a birthday wish was released by Meghan and Prince Harry.

While the possibility stands that the couple gave Prince Charles a call instead of taking to social media to wish him a happy birthday, the lack of post highlights how differently the brothers approach their roles in the royal family. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been extremely public about their disinterest in upholding tradition, so the question stands if there is animosity between them and the rest of the family that led to their social media silence.

As Meghan and Prince Harry have grown more established in their new home of the United States, it only becomes more evident how different they are from the traditional norms of the Royal Family. Most recently, the couple was reportedly denied having a wreath lain for them on remembrance day--a historic UK holiday honoring military veterans.

The pair were reportedly upset by their lack of wreath at the event, laying their own in a Los Angeles cemetery to commemorate the lives that were lost outside of the official ceremony. While we wish to be a fly on the wall of the inner workings of the Royal Family, we’re sure that either way, Prince Charles likely wasn’t too upset by the lack of Instagram post--just a hunch!
