According to Dr. Romero, eating protein at breakfast is a small investment for a big morning win. "Adding protein to your breakfast in the morning, such as eggs, yogurt, milk, cottage cheese, beans, or nut butters, has several important health benefits, especially as we age," she says.

There are several reasons protein can do wonders for your brain health. First of all, she explains, it keeps you full longer, especially when compared to carb-heavy options like toast, cereal, and pastries, which digest quickly and often leave you hungry soon after. "Eating protein at breakfast reduces hunger-driven eating which may indirectly benefit cognition by limiting energy crashes," Dr. Romero explains. "This is because protein digests more slowly than carbohydrates and delivers a steady glucose supply to the brain."

The next brain-boosting benefit of protein is the fact that proteins are made of amino acids. "Amino acids help your body make neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, which affect mood, attention, and thinking," Dr. Romero tells us.
