This One Mistake Could Be Why Your iPhone Is Running Slow And Malfunctioning

Not long ago, every single thing I tried to do on my iPhone was met with the longest lag known to man. I couldn’t open Notes. I couldn’t effectively swap out one web page for another without having to wait forever for it to change. And the list went on and on. I worried that this slowness might have meant my phone had a virus, or had been hacked. In fact, the root problem was neither of those things (thank goodness). It required updating one setting, which took five minutes to do. Suddenly, my phone was like a brand new device. It did what I told it to do without causing a fuss or doing it at a snail’s pace.

Instead of worrying that your phone needs a new battery or another expensive fix, hold that thought. Check on this one setting first to make sure it’s updated. This one mistake could be the reason why your phone is running slow and malfunctioning.

Not Updating iOS

If you aren’t updating iOS when Apple issues new software updates, your phone isn’t as secure as it could be, nor is it going to function as well. Apple periodically puts out new updates when it detects bugs in its code or other issues, or if it can improve upon a feature or tool. When you don’t update your phone, you leave it more vulnerable to hackers and malware, spyware, ransomware, and phishing attacks. You also make your phone less efficient and fast. New iOS versions often improve data privacy features (like App Tracking Transparency) and not updating it can allow apps to track your activity without your permission.

Turn On Automatic iOS Updates

Instead of periodically checking for new updates yourself, which can feel time consuming, iPhone has a setting that you can enable to automatically download iOS updated when they become available. To do this, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Turn on “Download iOS Updates” and “Install iOS Updates.” This will make sure your phone downloads these updates, and does so overnight (when you won’t be using your device).
