According to reports, President Donald Trump flew to China on Air Force One alongside Melania director Brett Ratner, while the First Lady stayed behind in Washington, D.C. And naturally, her absence sparked a wave of speculation online.

There has been a lot of speculation about why the First Lady didn't accompany her husband on the trip, which was reportedly rescheduled amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Trump did, however, have some family members with him on the trip, including son Eric Trump and daughter-in-law Lara Trump.
One explanation for Melania staying behind is that she was honoring the 180-day milestone since the president signed the Fostering the Future Executive Order, which supports foster youth and is tied to one of her signature initiatives.
"The First Lady has prioritized America's families and children in her initiatives here at home and is focused on these responsibilities at the present time," a source reportedly told the New York Post.
It has been reported that Melania will join her husband in welcoming Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, to the White House during their expected reciprocal visit in September.
Donald Trump And Melania Trump Reportedly Live Very 'Separate Lives'
Another reason people have speculated about Melania's absence stems from ongoing rumors surrounding the couple's private life.
In May 2025, author Michael Wolff claimed on The Daily Beast Podcast that the Trumps were effectively "separated" and "live separate lives."
The White House strongly denied Wolff's claims, with communications director Steven Cheung previously calling him a "lying sack of [expletive]" and "a fraud." However, the rumors have continued circulating online, with many social media users referencing them while discussing Melania's absence from the China trip.

Social media was flooded with speculation about why Melania skipped the trip, with some users offering more dramatic theories than others.
