The Royal Family Is Reportedly 'Preparing' For Prince William To Become King

The royal family has seen a lot of chaos over the years, with the departure of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as well as the recent arrest of Prince Andrew.

However, there's been one thing that royal family fans have been looking forward to, which is the transition of the throne from King Charles III to Prince William, who is next in line to become the King of England. When the 77-year-old monarch revealed his cancer diagnosis in February 2024, many felt he might step down in order for his son to take over, but at the end of last year, things seemed to be taking a turn for the better.

Although Charles is still on the throne, carrying out his royal duties, a palace aide insider recently told popular reporter Rob Shuter that they're "preparing" for William's takeover, and could be ready for it to happen within the next year.

"The institution is preparing emotionally, even if the paperwork hasn't caught up," the source told Shuter, who also mentioned that the dad-of-three is "already king unofficially" in "many ways."

Royal Biographer Notes That King Charles Had Goals Of 'Slimming Down' The Number Of Working Royals

Over the last few years, particularly since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, her son, King Charles, has made a few changes, following a slightly different standard than what his mother did during her 70 years on the throne.

According to royal insiders and biographers, the 77-year-old wanted to focus on minimizing the number of royals who were actively working, in order to make their faces not only more recognizable, but more accountable over time. Though there hasn't been a ton of progress on that front, the stripping of the former Prince Andrew's title was an indicator that he was comfortable with narrowing down the monarchy.

"There's been a lot of talk about a slimmed-down monarchy for many, many years, and certainly, if you looked at what Charles's view of that was maybe 10 years ago, it would have been Harry at the center," royal biographer Russell Meyers told Us Weekly. "It does look a little bit thin on the ground at the moment, but I think what the King wanted to do was try to make the royal family much more accountable."
