Neither Prince William nor Kate Middleton came across well in Prince Harry‘s tell-all memoir, Spare. But their reputations were already under scrutiny almost a year before its release, following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex dropped a series of allegations in their now-infamous Oprah interview, most notably that some members of the royal family had allegedly expressed concerns about the color of their son Prince Archie‘s skin before he was born.

Kate Middleton Took Prince Harry And Meghan Markle's Oprah Interview Very Hard
Unsurprisingly, the interview did not go down well with the royal family, with some members being hit harder than others. According to the new book William and Catherine: The Monarchy's New Era: The Inside Story by Russell Myers, the Princess of Wales was particularly affected by the fallout.
The Princess of Wales reportedly felt that some of the issues the former Suits actress had raised in the interview about adjusting to royal life could have been avoided had she accepted the help Kate had offered when she first joined the royal family.
And this confession, which was aired so publicly and unexpectedly, reportedly made Kate distrust the Sussexes, as it seemed they were twisting the narrative.

"There was a lot of sadness there, but that being said, she was very clear that any engagement with Harry or Meghan should be with the utmost of caution because it was obvious that they weren't to be trusted," Myers wrote.
According to the book, Kate's relationship with the Sussexes became so strained that she reportedly didn't care that they had stepped down as senior royals. In fact, she didn't want them to remain in the fold because of the fallout.
"Catherine had less interest than her husband in trying to persuade Harry to stay in his current role," Myers dished.

Prince William Felt The Weight Of Megxit
Prince William, known for his no-nonsense approach to both the royal family and the institution, surprisingly took the Sussexes' departure in 2020 very hard. This might come as a shock to people who are familiar with his strong desire to modernize and slim down the monarchy ahead of his eventual ascension to the throne.
The Prince of Wales was reportedly "intensely saddened" by his brother's decision to step down as a senior royal, recognizing his departure as the end of an era. "He and Harry had been drifting apart for years, but now he knew deep down that there would be no turning back," Myers explained.
"Fond memories of their childhood, from helping each other through the tragedy of their mother's death to growing up in the public eye, were now tarnished by the division at the heart of the family," Myers wrote.
