Kamala Harris’ recent appearance at an NAACP fireside chat in Detroit has gone viral, and not because of anything she said during the conversation. Rather, social media users couldn’t help but point out that it seemed like Harris was using a “new accent” as she spoke. Despite attending a campaign event, Harris still hasn’t confirmed if she’ll be running for president in 2028, sticking to her claim that she “might.” Keep reading for more information.

Kamala Harris Debuts ‘New Accent’

On Tuesday, September 22, Harris appeared at a Detroit Branch NAACP fireside chat, where she urged attendees to vote in the upcoming midterm elections. She emphasized the importance of Democratic turnout, telling voters they don’t have to “love” the candidate they vote for. “It’s okay to not be in love with a candidate,” she said. “It’s okay to vote and ask everybody else to vote because this choice is better than that one.”

While Harris’ political message was indeed the focus of the event, clips began going viral online for different reasons. Critics claimed that Harris’ voice sounded noticeably different than in previous appearances, with some characterizing the difference as a “new accent” based on changes in her cadence and pronunciation. This isn’t the first time that Harris has been accused of altering the way she speaks depending on the audience—she received many of these accusations while campaigning in 2024.

Social Media Reactions

Across social media platforms, many users made lighthearted jokes about Harris' seemingly wide array of accents she can tap into, while others weren't as nice. "Please let her run!" one person wrote on Instagram. "I miss these clips! Jamaican is still my favorite accent!"

"That 'accent' sounds like drunk to me," another person suggested.

"She sounds drunk," agreed the next user.

"Word salad with a twist," wrote one person.

"Nails on a chalkboard," added another.

"She already has so many," one user pointed out, referring to her seemingly many accents. "Where did she get them all?"

"This is a little cringe!" a final user wrote. "Love her down though."
