Jay-Z Reflects On His Relationship With Beyoncé In New HBO Documentary

The eight-part HBO docuseries JÄY-Z in 8 features Jay-Z sitting down with legendary music producer Rick Rubin to revisit his music catalog and discuss the personal experiences behind some of his most popular songs. In the third episode, the conversation turned to "4:44," the title track from his 2017 album, which touches on his relationship with Beyoncé, fatherhood, and personal growth.

While discussing the song, the rapper opened up about how he and the "Love On Top" singer transitioned from talking on the phone and being friends to officially becoming a couple. The two began dating in the early 2000s before marrying in 2008, but the rapper revealed that taking that next step was not as straightforward as he might have hoped.

Looking back, he explained that he knew he liked Beyoncé but did not know how to ask her to take their relationship to the next level.

"That's how we start going together," he recalled, as reported by People. "I was so immature and so afraid to be vulnerable that I like this person. I like this woman. And I'm like, how do we take the step from just talking on the phone and being friends to boyfriend and girlfriend?"

Jay-Z Admitted He Was Afraid To Be Vulnerable When He Fell For Beyoncé

The dad-of-three's look-back offered a more personal look at the beginnings of one of music's most famous relationships. Rather than confidently asking the Grammy-winner to be his girlfriend, he admitted that he struggled to communicate what he wanted, ultimately choosing an awkward approach that reflected his fear of putting his feelings on the line.

The rapper explained that Beyoncé was able to recognize his difficulty with vulnerability and meet him where he was emotionally. He also acknowledged that his approach was far from a conventional romantic gesture, even as he reflected on how much he has grown since those early days together.

"Instead of saying, 'Let's try this thing, boyfriend and girlfriend...' I was like, 'Don't embarrass me,'" he continued. "It's like, are you asking me to be your girlfriend? That was the only way I could get to being vulnerable like that."

Nearly two decades after they began dating, Jay-Z and Beyoncé remain one of the music industry's most prominent couples. In the documentary, he also reflected on how his personal growth and the couple's relationship have affected their three children, acknowledging that growing up can mean realizing that parents are human and make mistakes. He emphasized that he and the Cowboy Carter icon continue to choose each other and work through challenges together.
