Seemingly convenient foods are everywhere, from grab-and-go breakfasts to quick snacks to drinks that promise to fuel busy days. But while these options may save you time, many ultra-easy options are also ultra-processed, which means they can do some serious damage to your blood sugar. Often, they lead to energy crashes, hard-to-resist cravings, and weight gain.

Jennifer Brown, MD, ABOM, ABFM, a board-certified obesity medicine physician at MyObesityTeam, explains that certain popular convenience foods are especially problematic because they cause rapid blood sugar spikes without providing the fiber or protein needed to stabilize energy levels. When you eat these foods on a regular basis, the blood sugar roller coaster could lead to insulin resistance, increased hunger, and stubborn weight gain. She recommends steering clear of sugar breakfast cereals, processed snacks like pretzels, and sweetened beverages. Learn more about the risks of each below.

1. Sugary Breakfast Cereals

Sugary breakfast cereals may seem like a harmless (and delicious) morning staple, but Dr. Brown says they’re one of the biggest culprits when it comes to blood sugar issues. "Most cereals are loaded with sugar and contain little fiber or protein," she explains. "Eating this type of breakfast food causes a sudden spike in blood glucose, followed by a 'crash' a couple of hours later, which causes cravings for more sugar."

That cycle of spikes and crashes can make it harder to control appetite throughout the day—which means you'll be much more likely to overeat later on. To prevent this, Dr. Brown recommends protein- and fiber-rich options that help keep blood sugar steady. "A better breakfast alternative would be plain Greek yogurt with fruit, such as blueberries or a hard-boiled egg," she says. There are plenty of high-protein breakfasts to choose from!

3. Sweetened Coffee Drinks, Energy Drinks, And Sports Drinks

Beverages can be one commonly overlooked culprit of blood sugar spikes, especially when they’re sweetened. "These beverages contain liquid sugar that is absorbed almost immediately into the bloodstream, causing extreme glucose spikes," Dr. Brown says. Because liquid calories don’t require digestion like solid foods, they hit the bloodstream fast, usually without providing any satiety. It's a lose-lose!

Over time, these repeated blood sugar spikes can contribute to insulin resistance and weight gain, even if the rest of your diet feels relatively balanced. Dr. Brown recommends sticking with simpler options instead: "It’s better to stick with unsweetened coffees, zero sugar sports drinks for electrolytes, or plain water." Got it!

3. Pretzels And Chips

Salty snacks like pretzels and chips are often marketed as a healthier alternative to sweets, but Dr. Brown says they can be just as disruptive to blood sugar. "While these snacks may seem like a better alternative to snack cakes or cookies, they actually are designed to trigger constant grazing behavior," she explains.

These foods are made from ultra-processed starches that digest quickly and offer little nutritional value. "They contain ultra-processed starches, which can cause blood sugar spikes, and no protein," Dr. Brown warns.

Instead, she recommends reaching for nutritious snacks that combine protein and healthy fats, such as "a cheese stick, nuts, or a hummus plate," which will keep your belly full and your energy levels steady.

When you swap these common convenience foods for healthier alternatives, you're setting yourself up for healthier, more sustainable weight loss over time.
