The billionaire recently appeared on NBC News' Meet the Press with Kristen Welker, where he discussed the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence and the challenges governments and other companies face in keeping up with it. The interview touched on AI's potential to transform jobs and provide opportunities, the possibility of it growing to be malicious, and why he believes governments need to establish safeguards.
During the interview, Bill emphasized that AI could have enormous benefits while also creating major risks if it is misused. He specifically warned about the possibility of bad actors gaining access to powerful AI systems and using them in ways that could result in mass casualties, arguing that the technology could potentially be more destructive than previous threats humanity has faced.
"The most dangerous thing we're facing right now is people with bad intent using AI," he stated. "Historically, countries had cyberattack teams, and they could think of things like bioterror weapons. Now, small groups with AI can do what only the biggest countries could do. So it's really the bad intent plus AI that looms as a major threat. Unless governments insist on various safeguards, you know, we will see a lot of big, negative things because we're not safeguarding."

During his interview, the 70-year-old also brought up the recent claims from AI whistleblowers that the growing technology could have the potential to wipe out the human race if it's allowed to develop with less supervision and regulation, noting it was "certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths."
After his interview aired, the tech tycoon's warnings about AI sparked criticism from people online who pointed to his own history of promoting and supporting the technology. He's been involved in AI discussions for years, including through Microsoft, which has a multibillion-dollar partnership with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.
