Ben Affleck Addresses Whether He Would Run For Political Office At ‘Animals’ Premiere
The father-of-three plays a Brentwood businessman running for Los Angeles mayor in the new thriller, which he also directed and co-wrote. And when he was asked whether art could imitate life during the red carpet interview, his answer suggested that a political career wasn’t on the cards anytime soon…
The Oscar winner, 54, who has previously supported the presidential campaigns of Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris, made his feelings about the current state of American politics very clear.
“We don’t ask the question of what are your qualifications to hold public office any longer,” the Good Will Hunting alum said. “It’s, ‘You wanna join the circus? Who’s the biggest carny?’ I think that there is a whatever side of the aisle you’re on, one of the interesting things that people can agree on is a collective disappointment with the way that American politics has trended.”
“There’s nobody alive now who thinks, hey, we’re really doing it right and things are going great and I love this political system. And that’s a problem,” the Air actor continued, before going on to criticize the current state of American politics…

"It's just about money, raising money, it's just about playing a sort of adolescent game of who can make fun of the other person better or be more reductive and stupid about something rather than actually trying to talk about the issues," he said.
"I think the thing that's missing from politics, frankly, is you have to lead. You can't just scare people. You can't just hector them. You can't lecture them. You can't guilt them into it. You've got to inspire them. Otherwise, they don't want to vote for you."
And this wasn't the first time Affleck had spoken out about the political system. In a separate interview with USA Today, published on October 6th, the actor said he had become "so disillusioned with the system and with politics and politicians, and the way it works." He also pointed to the "hypocrisy, corruption and failure" he had witnessed as reasons for his reluctance to enter politics himself.
The actor's feelings about entering politics were just as clear when speaking to Variety. "Selfishly, I just see what a difficult grind of a job it is and I'd rather make movies about it," he noted.
Co-star Kerry Washington, who plays his wife in the movie, also weighed in on the possibility of Affleck running for office, and said: "We keep telling him that he should, but he doesn't want to."
She went on: "You know, we're in a place in our politics right now where anything is possible, but I would hope that the people who are running for office want to be there and he has been very explicit in saying that he doesn't want to run for office." The Argo actor then joked, "Maybe they hate me," in reference to why his co-stars want him to enter politics.

Social Media Users Slam Ben Affleck Over His Comments About American Politics
Affleck's comments attracted a lot of attention on social media, with many people criticizing the actor for speaking about the state of American politics despite his own wealth and success. Others questioned whether he was really in touch with the struggles of everyday Americans, while some simply made it clear that they wouldn't want to see him running for office anyway…
"Typical celebrity arrogance. He has no idea what most Americans think or want. He needs to stay in his bubble of ignorance," slammed one X user. "Ben Affleck is a millionaire and lives in a gated community. He does not have my/our problems," added a second, as a third said: "Watching Ben Affleck pretend like he’s one of us suffering is truly pathetic"
"Why is it always the wealthiest, most privileged celebrities that are always whining?" questioned a fourth. "Hollywood never disappoints with 'I have my finger on the pulse of the nation!' Actors are the last people on the face of the earth I would get my world views from," commented a fifth.

"These people are so ignorant. They live in a bubble. Many times you ask these people basic questions about what’s going on in America and they don’t know," wrote a sixth.
"Who cares what Affleck or any other ignorant, egomaniacal celeb has to say? They're irrelevant!" exclaimed a seventh. "And why would we care what Ben Affleck thinks about politics? He plays make believe for a living," added an eighth. "Oh gee another entertainer living in the leftist bubble. Passing from cliche to boring," wrote a ninth.
"There's nobody alive who thinks Ben Affleck should run either," quipped a tenth. "Who in their right mind thinks Ben Affleck should run for president?" questioned an eleventh. "Nobody wants to hear an actors take on politics. Nobody wants him to run for president," added a twelfth.
"Right, right, 'America, very, very bad', says the fool who has been able to make millions in America," wrote a thirteenth, as a fourteenth simply described his comments as "tone deaf."

Others took the opportunity to make some personal digs at the Gone Girl actor, including references to his previous marriage to Jennifer Lopez.
"There's a collective disappointment in Mr Affleck's life choices, except for the meme-fodder," joked one person.
"Same guy who thought Jennifer was a good choice," wrote a second, while a third said: "Says the man who married J-Lo twice. His opinion on anything matters not." "And he married J-Lo. I wouldn’t take him seriously," added a fourth.
