A popular salad dressing has been recalled in three states over potential Salmonella contamination, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has now assigned the recall its highest risk classification.

Salata Dressings, LLC., based in Houston, is recalling its Salata Salad Kitchen Jalapeño Avocado Dressing after its supplier notified the company that diced jalapeños used in the dressing may have been contaminated with Salmonella.

The FDA classified the recall as Class I on Sept. 29, making it the agency’s most serious recall category. The classification is used when there is a “reasonable probability” that exposure to a recalled product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death.

The recall covers 1,724 cases of the dressing, which was distributed in Georgia, North Carolina and Texas, according to the FDA’s enforcement report.

Which Salad Dressing Is Recalled?

The recall includes Salata Salad Kitchen Jalapeño Avocado Dressing sold in both 12.5-fluid-ounce bottles and one-gallon jugs. The one-gallon containers are packaged four jugs per shipping case. The affected bottles have expiration dates of:

  • Nov. 5, 2026
  • Nov. 13, 2026
  • Nov. 18, 2026
  • Nov. 25, 2026

The recalled one-gallon jugs have expiration dates ranging from Oct. 6 through Oct. 26, 2026. The initial recall announcement focused on the smaller bottles sold at HEB grocery stores in Texas between July 13 and Aug. 5.

Those bottles have black caps and carry the November expiration dates. The FDA’s subsequent enforcement report expanded the information, listing distribution in Georgia, North Carolina and Texas and including the one-gallon foodservice containers.

The FDA and company announcement do not identify other specific grocery stores, restaurants or foodservice customers in Georgia and North Carolina.

Why Is the Dressing Being Recalled?

Salata Dressings initiated the voluntary recall after learning from its jalapeño supplier that the diced jalapeños used in the dressing could be contaminated with Salmonella.

The potentially contaminated jalapeños may also be associated with a multistate Salmonella outbreak that the FDA is investigating. Salmonella can cause symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Some infections can become serious, particularly among young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. When the recall was initially announced in August, the company said no illnesses had been reported in connection with the affected dressing.

The recall comes as the FDA investigates a broader multistate Salmonella outbreak that has been linked to contaminated jalapeños.

According to the latest information cited in the recall update, the outbreak has sickened 488 people and resulted in 65 hospitalizations.

What Should Consumers Do?

Consumers who have the recalled Jalapeño Avocado Dressing should not eat it. Salata advises customers to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.

People should also thoroughly clean and sanitize surfaces, utensils and containers that may have come into contact with the dressing to help prevent potential cross-contamination.

Consumers with questions can contact Salata Dressings at 281-881-4785 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or email the company at inquiries@growfoodpacking.com. Because the FDA has classified the recall as Class I, consumers should check their refrigerators, pantries and other storage areas for the affected dressing and dispose of or return any recalled product they find.
